In a landmark decision that champions energy independence and economic stability, a U.S. federal court has overturned the Biden administration’s indefinite ban on liquified natural gas (LNG) export permits. Judge James Cain of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana said in his order that the decision is “effective immediately.” The overturning of the LNG export ban represents a significant victory for Texas and the broader energy industry, reinforcing the critical importance of natural gas in the modern energy landscape. Last week the DMRE released its draft Gas Master Plan. The plan does not appear to provide any firm solutions to South African industrial gas users immediate concern - which is that Sasol has informed them that they will be halting their current supply of piped natural gas from Mozambique's Pande and Temane gas fields in mid 2026. In the plan the DMRE suggests that existing inland and coastal gas users will switch to imported LNG and appears to suggest that they between 2024 and 2030 they will be able to import gas from an FSRU that will be moored in the port of Richards Bay primarily for the purpose of fuelling one of Karpowerships floating-gas-to-power plants (but this project is currently on hold). The plan is vague at best and doesn't appear to have been drafted in consultation with gas users.

A DELAY ON LNG TERMINAL UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION. The Biden administration is delaying a decision on a Louisiana liquefied natural gas export project. The Calcasieu Pass 2 project would be the largest in the United States with a capacity of 20 million metric tonnes per year. The White House is directing the DOE to expand the review of LNG export projects to include more climate change criteria, which could lead to delays for 16 proposed projects. A decision on CP2 may be delayed until after the Nov. 5 election to spare the White House from criticism from environmentalists, who form an important part of President Joe Biden's base. #energy #oilandgas #lngindustry

The Biden administration's pause of liquified natural gas (LNG) exports last week is small win for the environmentalists. This proposed project could have generated an estimated 3.2 billions tons of green house gasses - equivalent to half of the emissions the entire US produces each year. Most importantly, President Biden said he will "take a hard look at the impacts of LNG exports on energy costs, America’s energy security, and our environment". "A natural gas terminal that’s been operating for more than half a century has been a crucial safeguard against blackouts when bone-chilling cold hits the US Northeast. In less than five months, it’s slated to shut forever. Everett’s closure would jeopardize the reliability of the region’s power system in extreme weather, according to the nation’s top energy regulators. Because New England lacks enough pipelines to get gas from other parts of the country, it relies on Everett when heating demand spikes. The terminal receives cargoes of liquefied natural gas via tankers, mostly from Trinidad. The facility’s shutdown underscores the challenges facing America’s grid as the transition to cleaner energy accelerates and climate change triggers wilder weather. Following up on my previous post regarding the Biden administration's decision to halt new LNG projects, I came across an interesting article from The Wall Street Journal. The article explores the potential consequences of expanding exports for American consumers. As someone who believes that increasing gas production in the US, whether for domestic or foreign consumption, will ultimately benefit American consumers and keep domestic prices low, I found this to be an interesting read. Gas is a critical part of the US energy mix.
