I firmly believe that we do not have a labor shortage – but a talent shortage.   Seriously... there are more humans on the planet than ever before. There's a wealth of potential out there, just waiting for the right opportunity.   So, what’s the real issue? Education and awareness.   As an industry, most of us have not built the infrastructure and resources to attract and nurture this raw talent at the ground level. Yes there are wonderful trade schools and big GC's have great apprenticeship programs - but we ALL need to shift our focus from seeking the perfect fit, to developing the perfect fit.   At Benchmark Search Group, we are spending considerable time and resources on this problem - because I believe in the solution. We volunteer time with the Northern Colorado Construction Sector Partnership because they have an incredible mission that aligns with these values. This year we launched the Benchmark Construction Trades scholarship with Aims Community College to help bridge the gap. We advocate for candidates who are trying to make the transition. Great insight for the future of our industry. The target of 6th grade to produce skilled trade professionals for the future is just mind blowing. The fact that the pre apprenticeship program also implements financial courses to help the young apprentices ensure they manage their finances correctly is awesome. The real key for future electricians and all skilled professions is to always be pushing your abilities and to pursue the education to go along with the technical skills. The studies show that an apprentice starts out making a higher salary than most college degrees will tell you that this is a long-term career to provide for any lifestyle you could want.

Nice article for those not in the industry to read. However, I want to make it clear: BOTH Merit (Non Union) and Union companies have legitimate apprenticeship programs. It takes both types of companies to build projects for our City and if we keep up with this divisive mentality (only using Union companies or use of PLA's) then we are just hurting our small local contractors and ultimately our local economy (Non Union make up ~80% of contractors in MO and ~90%+ in KS.)

The math isn’t mathing 🤯 These are rough numbers but the picture is clear, we are in trouble. Not to say that things won’t get built, it’s just going to cost a whole lot more money and take a lot longer as availability of skilled labour continues to diminish. This also doesn’t take into account the facts that: - not all apprentices complete their program and - people change industries before they retire Talk about job security!
