We live in a strange world. We work hard to give our children an education, to prepare them for the world. We teach them kindness, empathy and social good. But when they stand up for social justice, we have a problem. We teach them to be accountable for their actions, but when they try to hold us accountable, we have a problem. We teach them about the planet, about animals and birds, about mountains and oceans, but when they start to care about climate change, we have a problem. We teach them that equality and freedom are important but when they try to stand up for those who are marginalised and oppressed, we have a problem. We teach them to read and to write. The best schools pride themselves on their students’ communication and leadership skills. But when they start to articulate their ideas and take action in forms of protest, collective action, community organization then we have a problem. We have a problem. #Fridayrant #WhoisEducatingWho #allmyteachersarechildren

Journalist, author, speaker, podcaster former NPR correspondent. I write about climate, youth, mental health, education, future & change. Latest book is The Stolen Year. Aspen Institute senior advisor.
In my latest Substack, I unpack the inner turmoil I feel wanting to open my kids’ eyes to our beautiful, complex world... while wrestling with the climate cost of globetrotting adventures few families can access. I explore the tension between privileged experiences that shape perspectives vs contributing to inequality. How do we raise socially conscious youth without resorting to paralysis or performative guilt? How can parents thoughtfully discuss impacts of inequality with children? I invite readers to reflect on nurturing open-hearted kids who uplift others, without denying them opportunities. If you also ask “How do I raise kids who aren’t entitled while providing privileges I benefited from?” then please give this one a read. Reconciling contradictions of progress isn’t easy, but I believe in finding a thoughtful path.

Schools have failed. The replacement of absolute meritocracy and equal opportunity with kindness and equity has been neither kind, nor equal. Producing children who believe they are the centre of the world is a disaster. If you’re friends with your children when they’re a child, you won’t be friends with them when they’re an adult. Don’t ask the kids what they want to eat- put the chicken and broccoli in front of them. Eat it, or don’t. Thought-provoking discussion.

🌟 Let's tackle the root cause! 🌟 "Poverty isn't solely solved by schools—it's about enacting macroeconomic shifts that foster job creation with fair wages and accessible housing. Today, the Youth Empowerment Collective recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡 We honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never returned home. As we observe this day, we acknowledge the Indigenous peoples whose lands we live, work, and gather on, no matter where we are. We are committed to listening, learning, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous communities as we work toward healing and reconciliation. Every child matters, and through our collective efforts, we strive to create a future where every youth is empowered and respected. #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters #YouthEmpowerment #Reconciliation"

As we observe the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we are reminded of the pain caused by violence, domination, and the silencing of voices. This day is not only about reflecting on the tragic impact of residential schools on Indigenous communities and acknowledging the deep wounds that persist but also a call to action for each of us. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 means acknowledging the painful history and the stories of loss, but also the incredible resilience and the long road to healing that Indigenous communities have shown. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 means walking that road together, with each of us playing a part, fostering understanding, and creating a future rooted in respect and unity. Let today be a reminder that healing requires effort and that we can contribute to meaningful change through education, empathy, and solidarity. Let’s remember that empathy is a powerful tool in our journey towards reconciliation. #EveryChildMatters #TruthAndReconciliation #HonoringIndigenousVoices #HealingTogether

Today is World Day of Social Justice, a day to promote equal rights and opportunities for all people. This year's theme is "Global Coalition for Social Justice: Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances". It calls for international collaboration and solidarity to address the social justice challenges that affect millions of lives, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Social justice is not only a moral duty, but also a key driver of inclusive growth, innovation, and peace. We can draw inspiration from the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching, which guides us to live out our faith in action and apply this in all the work we do for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world. Let us join forces to make social justice a reality for everyone, everywhere. “Social justice is the best means to secure the common good.” – Pope Francis Image by brgfx on Freepik #WorldDayofSocialJustice #GlobalCoalitionforSocialJustice #CatholicSocialJustice #catholiceducationsandhurst
