🌟 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐲 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 🌟 Exactly a year ago, during my final semester of B.Arch (2024), I embarked on a deeply insightful project guided by my mentors, Ar. Trilok Kubde and Ar. RAJAT NAINWAL, titled: “𝗨𝗥𝗕𝗔𝗡 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗗’𝗦” – 𝗛𝗨𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦 & 𝗨𝗥𝗕𝗔𝗡 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠 (A Study of Old Commercial Space) The project revolved around understanding the intricate relationship between human interaction and urban forms, focusing on the transformative potential of urban voids. 📍 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: Detailed site mapping and documentation through urban structure, road networks, activity patterns, and more. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲: Understanding time-scale permanence by studying the past and present to uncover missing links. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱: Designing speculative solutions for an urban void, addressing stakeholder needs with regulatory compliance. 📚 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Influential works like The Image of the City by Kevin Lynch and The Urban Pattern by Gallion shaped my understanding of urban design's theoretical framework. 𝗔 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗠𝗲 This project wasn’t just an academic endeavor; it profoundly shaped my perspective on urban spaces and their human aspects. A Journey from Blueprints to Better Living 🌍 When I first held a pencil to a blank sheet in architecture school, I thought I was simply learning to design structures. But over time, I realized my work could be so much more – a chance to shape how people live, breathe, and interact within cities. My path took unexpected turns. After diving into architecture, I found myself captivated by urban planning and public health. Each field opened my eyes to a new perspective: cities aren’t just a collection of buildings but ecosystems where every choice impacts people’s lives. From the materials we choose to the design of public spaces, there’s potential for real, lasting change. I began asking: What if buildings could foster community? What if streets could improve well-being? And most importantly, how can we design cities that respond to both the people and the planet? Today, I’m working to answer these questions by blending architecture with urban planning and health insights. My mission is simple: to create spaces that are sustainable, resilient, and human-centered. I believe that with thoughtful, innovative design, we can build cities where people and nature coexist in harmony. Working with Landscape Architects and Designers for future ready products I came across this monstrosity in my research. German Artist Fabian Brunsing created this controversial coin-operated bench in 2008 called; Pay & Sit – the Private Bench. The spikes retract for a limited time once you Pay 50 cents. This is one park I don't want to see in the future 👀. This design triggers the deepest unsettling feeling. It's called hostile architecture in the public realm. The Artist's intension was to comment on privatization. Drawing attention to social inequalities and exclusions particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the homeless. What kind of future do we want to see? how can we design products that create a safe and inclusive place?
