To sustain the development and utilisation of oil and gas, which is crucial for developing countries that are determined to industralise and improve access to electricity and clean cooking solutions, there is a strong need to decarbonise oil and gas facilities. Ghana has earmarked CCS as one of its decarbonisation solutions in its Energy Transition Framework. Blessed with 4 large sedimentary basins, Ghana could become a major CCS hub in future. Beyond the framework, can we follow in the footsteps of Brazil and other countries to develop and pass a CCS legislation in line with our national ambitions, culture and resources to stimulate investment? Meanwhile, at the Net-Zero Carbon Emission Lab (NCEL), we are working on a project to conduct qualitative and quantitative assessment of the CCS potential of basins in Ghana. The industry body Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) has highlighted that the UK oil and gas industry exceeded emission reduction targets "despite uncertain times for the sector". Analysis by OEUK shows the #UK oil and gas industry has made important strides in reducing its carbon footprint, building upon an active and effective decarbonization plan. The industry body noted that the sector is on track to meet continuing emissions reduction targets, "reflecting industry's dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship". HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, MAURITIUS The bulk of Mauritius’s energy is derived from heavy fuel oil and coal. The remaining of the country’s power requirement is purchased from independent power producers, mainly private generators from the sugarcane industry using bagasse during the sugarcane harvesting season from June to November and imported coal outside of the harvesting season from December to May. The Mauritian government has been undertaking legal and institutional reforms in the energy sector. In 2016, the government created the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA) to promote the use of renewable energy in Mauritius. Bagasse (sugarcane waste) is currently the leading source of renewable energy (13.3 percent), while the country derives its other renewable electricity generation from hydro, wind, landfill gas, and solar.
