Associate Director, Creator Management @ Influential | Assistant Commissioner, Women, Transgender, and Non-Binary Conference @ Big Apple Softball League | Owner @ Y'all Sports
A big initiative I implemented this year with #BigAppleSoftballLeague was winter training. Regionally, Softball sees much more year-round activity in southern and western-lying states, due to obvious weather restrictions on the east coast. While these clinics are a fun way for us to keep our players active during the winter training, they’re actually also a very strategic business move. Come April (the start of our spring season) we see a significant number of injuries in weeks 1, 2, and 3, a phenomenon that I’m sure most spring-dwelling sports in cold winter climates face every year. The issue is, when you’re a nonprofit organization and you have to pay for a multitude of your expenses on a seasonal calendar, those injuries can lead to team forfeits, and thus, paying for unused fields, umpiring, and equipment. The expenses incurred can lead to unhealthy books, poor community engagement, and a slew of inefficient workflows and headaches. This small effort to get our players moving on a weekly basis, can help re-develop sleeping muscle groups and tiny tendons that play a big part in reducing injury. What it also does is create more opportunity for sponsorships and inbound community support. Following each of our clinics, we host after events that aim to engage the community and support local community-facing businesses. And although these clinics have been quite the lift on our end in curating coaches, players, and registration infrastructure, the payoff is ultimately tenfold. I am so thankful to continue the work of those who came before me. Onward and upward! #BASL #VolunteerAllYear

I admire and agree with you on many things Julien - but in this black & white roast of pitch competitions, (not surprisingly, I guess!) I don't 100% agree. (𝘐𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵: 𝘑𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘴, '𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘱 𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴.') 1️⃣ It depends on the startup's goals and the stage you are at. Pitch competitions can get early stage startups exposure to a new audience, and connected to potential customers, investors/partners that would otherwise be out of reach. So while I agree not every competition is valuable and can eat precious time -if it fits with your goals? Go for it! 2️⃣ The biggest benefit of a pitch competition for a founder is pushing you to get your story straight under time pressure, for a specific audience - and sometimes the jury are really smart people. You can get some great feedback and advice. Founders naturally are focused on product and building the company: head-down, working on the stuff. But a pitch competition causes you to get head-up - think about what's important for the audience and the judges, not just focusing on the process you are working on. 3️⃣ You learn a lot from other founders by being focused together on a common goal. When I was in the final of Present Your Startup in 2019, I learned so much from the amazing pitch of Philip Schemmekes (let alone learning from all the teams I have coached in numerous finals.) 𝐏𝐋𝐔𝐒 - 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞! I won a pitch competition in 2019. The prize? A Mini for a year! Handy, when I didn't have a car - and I found my new house by accident while driving around in it! And teams I have coached in pitch competitions have won over 35 prizes, totalling over €6 Million in prize money. In short: Where we agree Julien is that if it doesn't fit your goals, competitions can steal precious time. But If a pitch competition fits your goals and priorities, I say go for it! 👍✅
Start-up monkeys, please stop performing your tricks at pitch competitions. 🙉 🙊 🐵 🙈 🐒 ❌
