West Michigan’s colleges and universities contribute to the community in many ways. They are economic drivers through significant construction projects, talent attraction and retention efforts, health and technology research, and workforce development. We talk to the presidents of Grand Valley State University, Ferris State University and Grand Rapids Community College about how and why they are driving economic development and what to expect in the future.

As Dean of Students, being able to support my campus community, is essential to help ensure that our students are able to maximize their college experience.
Being able to organize a Professional Development for faculty and staff enables educators to develop the knowledge and skills they need to address students' challenges.
To be effective, professional development requires thoughtful planning followed by careful implementation with feedback to ensure it responds to educators' learning needs.

What we learned:
1. Don't let #insecurities make you change course. Other people might be doing things a little differently, but that doesn't necessarily mean your plan is wrong.
2. Take a breath and set your #intention. When you focus on the experience you want to create, you will likely create it, even if your words are imperfect.
3. Keep your head in the game. If you make a mistake, focus on and take the best next action to get the #results you want.

CODES scholars are making a big impact in their first year of college! They recently joined SIUE in filling the halls of the State Capitol to discuss their research in partnership with local communities. It's impressive to see such commitment to creating positive change. Keep up the great work!
#DidYouKnow that 73% of #FirstNation water systems are at high or medium risk of contamination?
Safe drinking water is essential to human health and well-being. For many First Nations people and communities, water also has deep cultural and spiritual significance. Although access to safe and reliable drinking water is simple for most Canadians, many first Nations communities have long been experiencing challenges to accessing safe drinking water, which is exemplified by that fact that the water supplied to many First Nations reserves is often contaminated, hard to access, or at risk due to faulty treatment systems. Today, on #WorldWaterDay I encourage you to educate yourself on the #WaterCrisis currently effecting several #FirstNationCommunities.
As of March 2023, there were a total of 32 drinking water advisories in effect in First Nations communities.
About 62% of these advisories have lasted for more than a year (i.e., long-term advisories), with some First Nations living under advisories for decades. For example, after a 25+ years of Canada’s longest boil-water advisory, the residents of Nestantaga Frist Nation in northern Ontario were still waiting for the upgrade and expansion of their water treatment plant that can provide them with safe drinking water.
Most of these drinking water advisories (85%) were "Boil Water" advisories. However, some communities were under "Do Not Consume" advisories, which means that even boiled water is unsafe to drink. For example, the Community Centre/Youth Centre Semi-Public Water System of Bearskin Lake First Nation has been under a "Do Not Consume" order for over 15 years. There were no "Do Not Use" advisories on First Nations reserves as of November 1, 2021.
Keep in mind, in some instances, a single drinking water advisory can affect as many as 5,000 people who lack access to safe and clean drinking water.

Exciting News!
Dr. Keely Baronak (Chair, Education Department at Carlow University) in partnership with Dr. William Baronak (Associate Professor, West Liberty University), and Dr. Jim Denova (Consultant for Special Projects, Intermediate 1) just published an insightful playbook titled "Reimagining Partnerships in Higher Education."
This is a playbook for school and university leaders considering more robust and innovative ways of conceptualizing teacher education.
Authors of the playbook engaged in a roundtable discussion with local school and higher education professionals. This included a few of our very own Carlow Education Department professionals: Karian Wise, Head of School for Early Learning Center; Sean Freeland, Assistant Professor of Education; and MiIsha Reid, Assistant Professor of Education at Carlow.
