What is it exactly that I do at sea? (Part 3/3) Over the past week or so, I have been sharing snippets of #LifeAtSea to show my main responsibilities as a Deck Officer onboard a foreign-going Tanker. If you haven't had the chance to read through Part 1 & 2, here's your sign! C: Routine & Operational duties (Rank Specific) Routine & Operational duties differ with ranks. Typically, the Chief Officer would be in charge for all Deck related maintenance & Cargo related duties. The 2nd Officer would be responsible for maintenance of all Bridge Equipment / Navigational Passage Planning / Medical related duties incl. maintaining our onboard Hospital. The 3rd Officer would be responsible for the maintenance of all Life-saving Appliances (LSA) & Fire-fighting appliances (FFA) In recent trends however, owners/managers have strategize a re-deployment of responsibilities. The responsibility of LSA/FFA are shared between the 2nd & 3rd Officer. There are a select few whom choose to provide additional officer(s) so as to lessen the work load of Deck Officers onboard. Lately, I have been preparing myself for the 2nd Officer role - a step up that personally seems to be pretty nerve wrecking but I’ve been blessed to have such a generous 2nd Officer onboard whom tirelessly guide me through. Here are my FAQs! : Qns: Having a CoC Class 3 (also commonly referred to as OOW Unlimited or 2nd Mate’s ) would mean that you are deemed competent by your Flag Administration to sail as a 2nd Officer – so why wouldn’t companies promote you directly to a 2nd Officer / why does it take time for you to be promoted from a 3rd to a 2nd Officer? Ans: In my opinion - similar to roles ashore, having the required qualification does not guarantee you a role which demands a higher responsibility. Officers often sign on after relatively lengthy period of time ashore since their cadetship (For their certifications, exams & courses etc.) With such critical (Navigational related) responsibilities, practically, it would only make sense to allow time for the officer to “settle down” & “refresh” This does not, in any way, mean that we are not competent to carry out the duties of a 2nd Officer – but rather reducing the risk of human error while we develop confidence, fine-tune our individual work processes & collect practical experience prior to taking on a more critical role. Qns: If Deck Officers typically have 2 x 4 hours Navigational Bridge duties a day (At Sea) – where do you find the time to complete other assigned duties, participate in onboard drills / trainings, complete administrative paper works, engaged in social activities, have sufficient shut-eye and personal time? Ans: In an attempt to engage more of my connections - I think I shall reserve this for my fellow seafaring sisters & brothers. Please comment below! *Old photo was taken off-duty, with another OOW on con.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST 💸(MONETARILY) TAKE TO OBTAIN YOUR SECOND MATE'S CERTIFICATION? Let's outline 🍁 a plan for it, considering various courses and their respective cost: 1. Radar Observer Simulator Course (ROSC): ₹9500 2. Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA): ₹6000 3. Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS): ₹9000 4. Medical First Aid (MFA): ₹4000 5. Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF): ₹9500 6. Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB): ₹8000 7. Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Radio Operator: ₹50000 (this includes - course, exam, Endorsement and GOC application fees) 8. Competency course for Second Mates: ₹42000 • Considering scheduling 📅 intervals between courses, the total duration for all courses amounts to 8 months(approx). • Therefore, if we consider the basic expense for fooding 🍱 and lodging 🏨 be ₹12000/month • Total for 8 months = 12000 X 8 = ₹96000 • 2nd mate Assessment fees = ₹3000 • For written 📝 exams it costs ₹1000/ function. Hence for three functions ₹3000. • Same for Orals, three functions = ₹3000 • If you're a DNS candidate🎖️and you apply for BSc it ll cost you ₹45000 • After you clear your 2nd mate's, COC application 📜 costs you ₹3000 •Total cost = ₹2,91,000 (Approx ₹3,00,000) ADDITIONALLY, THE COST CAN BE REDUCED BY: - For BSc candidates & DNS candidates(not willing to give BSc exam) can reduce the cost by ₹45000 - BSc candidates are exempted from the competency course for Second Mates, saving ₹42000. The indicated expense applies if you pass all the exam on your first attempt. Additionally, this represents the lowest 📉 calculated cost and may vary depending on lifestyle, choice of institute, travel 🛣️ and duration of courses. Please note, this information is provided to the best of my knowledge, and I'm available to clarify any doubts. Ps: This picture was taken during the competency course. Thanks 😇 Follow Arvashu Singh for more Informative content 🙌❤️ #merchantnavy #sailor #thirdofficer #seafarer #mmd #secondmates
