Bright Spaces, for Bright minds and Bright Futures I supported East Coast Architects in the design of two exemplary schools—7 Fountains Primary School and Vele Secondary School—where innovative daylighting strategies and smart lighting controls have transformed energy use in classrooms. Both schools feature simple, well-placed light switches that encourage the use of natural daylight and drastically reduce the need for artificial lighting. The experience at 7 Fountains helped refine the approach at Vele, where energy bills were compared with those of a neighboring school, showing remarkable savings. Too many times architects design the same type of education facility that meets the needs of the district. Our goal in this presentation is to give architects the tools they need to properly design a holistic education facility that will meet the needs of the whole child and their family.

A few topic highlights from the Association of School Business Administrators (ASBA) Victoria Conference: Schools are struggling to provide for students with disability - particularly to keep up with legislation and managing the parents expectations. We've come a long way - schools are so much more inclusive today than they were even 10 years ago - but there's a long way to go. How are schools incentivising staff to participate in overnight camps and international trips? Was it built into your enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA)? Teachers are scared of the legislative and duty of care requirements snd risks on these trips. Special responsibility allowances seemed to be popular in the room and a great suggestion was sending a nurse on all overnight trips (additional to staff student allowances). Continued fundraising is a massive and ongoing issue for many schools. Ann Badger spoke eloquently on the importance of authenticity, staying in contact with alumni, and allowing the major spokesperson to be the visionary persona supported by a team of fundraisers. It's about giving the "village" an opportunity to support the raising of the children in their community.

Glass plays an important role when it comes to designing schools. It creates light-filled spaces that are inviting and conducive to learning. In fact, numerous studies confirm that when school spaces are brighter, students learn faster, teacher morale improves, and districts can dramatically cut energy costs. As a result, school districts and their architects are working hard to find new ways to maximize the amount of natural light going into a space.
