While the model of packaging together all classes of insurance under one policy covering both construction and first year of operations continues to be a popular option for clients, it is worth bearing in mind that at times different components of the insurance package might be better sought as standalone placements. Today, we are proud to formally announce the launch of GCube’s new BESS consortium. Backed by six Lloyd's syndicates, this underwriter-led consortium provides BESS developers and asset owners with up to USD 100 million of ‘A’-rated insurance capacity. This represents a key milestone as GCube formalises its commitment to support the rapidly developing BESS market - and provides the sector with an experienced market leader, drawing on our 25+ years of renewable energy insurance expertise. Our BESS consortium now formalises our significant commitment to the sector." "BESS has reached a point of maturity where more and more capacity is required, but the complexity of mitigating losses with evolving technology also requires this capacity to be well-versed in handling claims and selecting risks. Insurance and Commercial Disputes Lawyer | Associate at Kennedys (Property, Energy and Construction) | Freelance Climate, Sustainability and ESG Writer
It was great to co-author this article for Insurance Day on key coverage issues arising from serial defect loss claims in offshore wind farms, with my colleagues, Patrick Foss and Jonathan Embling. The article was a write-up of the roundtable discussion we had the pleasure of facilitating at the Energy Insurance London conference last month and which received a lot of interest and positive feedback from attendees. So we decided to put our thoughts in writing, exploring the key coverage issues we see emerging in serial defect loss cases around ascertaining property damage, identifying whether defects are covered under the relevant policy, aggregation and more. The article also explores how the industry is responding to these issues including with new clauses/wordings. You can read the full article on Kennedys website here: https://lnkd.in/eeqt_D5T If you work in the renewable energy insurance space and would like to discuss any of the issues covered in our article don't hesitate to reach out. #renewableenergy #Insurance #constructionprojects #offshorewind #greenenergy #windfarms #insuranceday #insurancelaw #propertyinsurance #serialdefects #energyinsurance

Despite a track record of concerning failure events in the global Battery Energy Storage Systems (#BESS) market, underwriters remain optimistic about the sector's potential, provided key risks are managed. This is the outlook of GCube's latest market insights report, titled “Batteries Not Excluded: Getting the insurance market on board with BESS”, published today. The report aims to give asset owners and developers a transparent insight into the current state and future direction of BESS #underwriting, as well as the opportunities and challenges ahead. Leveraging 12 years of public data and insights from our global underwriting teams, “Batteries Not Excluded” unveils key failure event findings, including: • More than 50% of BESS failures occur within the initial two years of operation • 5-50 MWh BESS account for over half of total failure events globally • Solar-plus-storage projects contribute to 48% of failures Despite the ongoing challenges, there is optimism for the sector's growth. Underwriters increasingly recognise BESS's significance in the #EnergyTransition, and, with this, we anticipate BESS assets to comprise up to 30% of our underwritten #renewables portfolio by 2024. Fraser McLachlan, CEO, GCube, said: “GCube is a pioneer in the BESS field and has learnt the hard way, having handled some of the largest losses in the market to date. By consistently providing transparent information to insureds and brokers regarding underwriters' perspectives, we aim to foster sustainable, safe, and reliable growth in the sector." GCube Insurance has formed a new consortium to provide battery energy storage system (BESS) developers and asset owners with up to US$100m in insurance capacity. In conjunction with six Lloyd’s syndicates, the consortium aims to support the growing BESS sector by offering 'full follow' capacity for brokers in Australia, Europe, and the United States. The initiative is looking to address the increasing scale and complexity of BESS projects, covering both construction and operational phases. Despite recent incidents at battery storage facilities in Australia, insurance losses remain low, and there is a growing appetite in the country for the underwriting of BESS projects. The new consortium is expected to bring more experience and capacity to the market, potentially leading to lower pricing and more viable future projects. #insurance #australia #bess #BatteryEnergyStorageSystem

Thrilled to see another thought-provoking article from kWh Analytics' own Bobby McFadden in collaboration with Todd Burack, ARM, CRIS from McGriff. In the article published by Claims Journal Bobby and Todd tackle a critical challenge facing the rapidly growing renewable energy sector - accurately assessing the replacement cost of deployed solar assets. Undervaluation can leave asset owners vulnerable to huge out-of-pocket expenses if equipment is damaged, while also exposing insurers to unexpectedly large losses. The article dives into the complexities of solar asset valuation, including the impact of technological change, supply chain volatility, and skilled labor costs. I couldn't agree more with their recommendations - conduct regular valuation reviews, develop loss contingency plans, consider tech advancements, and engage in proactive communication with insurance partners. Accurate valuations require close collaboration between asset owners, brokers, and insurers. As they rightly point out, getting this right is essential for the long-term stability and growth of the renewable energy insurance market. What are your thoughts on the solar asset valuation challenge? Let me know in the comments. https://lnkd.in/gbAuM6AH
