The arrogance of space: are we designing our cities for cars or people? We need to rethink sustainable mobility, pedestrian, and justice. The unbalanced distribution of space between cars and people in European cities is striking. This raises questions about the efficient use of our limited urban space and the prioritization of private property over public access. Watch the video by Mikael Colville-Andersen where he explains the concept showing good and bad examples. https://lnkd.in/da67NFww #ArroganceofSpace #Sneckdown #UrbanPlanning #SustainableMobility #Equity #CityDesign #PublicAccess #Walkability #SustainableCities #Sustainableliving

View a reborn street in "Redreaming Cities: A Journey in Cities Without Limits". 🌳💡 Here, the concrete jungle is transformed into a mosaic of green and blue tones. A boulevard that was once lined with the constant stream of cars is now a quiet promenade, framed by rows of old trees that tell stories of growth and resilience. Between the cobblestones, gardens of native plants and flowers provide an oasis of biodiversity, contributing to an urban ecosystem that nurtures both wildlife and the human spirit. As the city reclaims space for nature, pedestrian and cycle paths invite a slower, more contemplative pace of life. More than just a transit way, this reimagined street is a lifeline for the community, a shared space that encourages connection, contemplation and coexistence with the natural world. This snapshot is a canvas of possibilities, showing that when we dream without boundaries, our urban spaces can transform into sources of well-being, sustainability and boundless creativity. #UrbanUtopia #RedreamingCities #EcoUrbanDesign #NatureMeetsCity

In a recent interaction with a 5-year-old, I learned of a game called "Wall Touch," which she plays with her apartment buddies. I couldn't help but think about how drastically urban childhood and lifestyles have evolved. In my childhood, the game was called "Tree Touch," and we would race from one tree to another, forming human chains to reach the most distant ones. Today's urban children are forced to play in dimly lit basements and ride bicycles within the confinements of their living rooms. This led me to question the cities we are building. Do our buildings promote connection and interaction? Are we prioritizing green spaces and nature? #SustainableArchitecture #LandscapeArchitecture #BuiltEnvironment #CommunityDesign #Urbanism #urbanecology #inclusivecities

In the heart of our bustling cities, often referred to as concrete jungles, we find a peculiar sense of beauty. It's a landscape where human creativity and order replace the inherent chaos of nature. But is this sense of beauty just a mirage, a fleeting illusion that masks the absence of nature's vibrancy? As we navigate through these urban landscapes, we must ask ourselves - how can we cultivate a vibrant nature within our cities? How can we reimagine our urban spaces to be more encompassing, more reflective of the diverse tapestry of life that thrives beyond the city limits? The answer lies in decentralization. By decentralizing our urban planning and design, we can create spaces that are not just about humans, but also about the myriad other species that share our planet. We can foster a full spectrum of life, from the smallest insects to the largest trees, creating a truly vibrant and dynamic urban ecosystem. This is not just about aesthetics or a sense of connection with nature. It's about recognising that we are part of a larger web of life, and that our cities can and should reflect this. It's about creating urban spaces that are not just liveable, but also sustainable and resilient. So, let's challenge the notion of the concrete jungle. Let's envision and create cities that are as vibrant and diverse as the natural landscapes they inhabit. After all, nature is not just something 'out there' - it's right here, in our cities, waiting to be nurtured and celebrated. How do we get there? Urban planning, green infrastructure, and innovative solutions are key. Share your ideas for fostering a more ecologically balanced future for our cities! 🐾 #UrbanEcology #SustainableCities #NatureInTheCity #pawsweb #science #research #sustainability #onehealth #urban #ecology #people #animals #waste
