My GSSoC Journey : How I Reached the Top of the Leaderboard 🚀 I'm thrilled to share that I have made it to the top of the leaderboard in the Girlscript Summer of Code (GSSoC) 2023! It’s been an incredible journey, filled with learning, collaboration, and a lot of coding. My Contribution Journey ⬇ Throughout GSSoC 2023, I made a total of 88 PR and that all got merged. I consistently committed code, reviewed pull requests, and engaged with the community. Each green square on the contribution graph represents a day of dedication and hard work. The journey wasn't easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. Key Strategies for Success --> Consistency is Key : Regular contributions, even if small, add up over time. Make it a habit to code daily or as frequently as possible. Choose Projects Wisely : Focus on projects that align with your interests and expertise. This not only makes the work enjoyable but also allows you to make significant and meaningful contributions. Engage with the Community : Open-source is as much about collaboration as it is about coding. Engage with project maintainers and other contributors. Ask questions, offer help, and provide feedback. Quality over Quantity : While it's important to contribute regularly, the quality of your contributions is what truly matters. Write clean, efficient code, and ensure your pull requests add value to the project. Keep Learning : Open-source projects are a great way to learn new technologies and improve your skills. Take every opportunity to learn from the codebase and from more experienced contributors. 🚀 Hackathon Experience by Team Tremendous Trio We are excited to share our exhilarating experience at the SRC Hackathon held on 27th July! It was an incredible opportunity to step beyond academia and dive into the real-world challenges of building tech solutions. Here's how our journey unfolded: 🌟 Hackathon Announcement: When the SRC announced the hackathon, we knew it was our chance to showcase our skills and learn something truly transformative. The energy was palpable as we rushed to participate, eager to embrace the learning that awaited us. 💡 Forming as a Team: With the chance to innovate right at our doorstep, we, the Tremendous Trio, united through a shared passion for technology. Together, we harnessed our combined skills and made our team official by registering for the hackathon. It was a moment of excitement and anticipation! ⏱ 12-Hour Rush: The day arrived to put our abilities to the test—not just coding, but also learning, adapting, and innovating under pressure. We were challenged to create an Event Management System for our college that was efficient, smart, and digital. After brainstorming the flow and understanding the requirements, we divided tasks amongst ourselves, employing the "divide and conquer" strategy. By lunchtime, the frontend was starting to take shape, and we were eagerly integrating it with the backend. We were so engrossed in the process, it took someone else to remind us to take a lunch break! Post-lunch, we progressed on the frontend, while simultaneously refining the backend. We even added exciting features like automated mailing, a chatbot, and AI image generation. By the end of the day, we had successfully accomplished most of our objectives, with a few left for future enhancement. 📊 Evaluation: The hackathon concluded with a project evaluation by our supportive and energetic Assistant Professor Sreenivas Reddicherla Sir. We showcased our product and explained every feature in detail, proud of what we had achieved in just 12 hours. 🔍 Personal Reflection: This hackathon made us realize our capabilities and inspired us to continue learning new technologies and approaches. My 2024 Recap: I know I'm very late for this post but koi nii chlta hai. 2024 was nothing short of amazing—a year full of learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. It had its share of challenges, but every setback taught me something valuable. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities, the people who supported me, and the lessons along the way. Here are some highlights from the year: -> My LeetCode journey started with a DSA bootcamp led by Moeez Ahmad Bhai. Back then, I didn’t even know what LeetCode was! The beginning was tough—I struggled to solve problems and figure out solutions. But with a month of consistent effort, I started to see progress. -> I participated in my very first coding competition, PU'Con-24. Even though I couldn’t solve any problems, it was a stepping stone. By the end of the year, I had taken part in 5–6 onsite contests and 25–30+ online ones. -> Completing the MERN stack was a big milestone for me. It wasn’t easy, but it helped me gain confidence in full-stack development and build meaningful projects. -> One of the greatest highlights of 2024 was RACSIT, an international conference. An incredible experience where I learned so much about managing large-scale events, coordinating with amazing speakers, and overseeing everything. The entire process was both challenging and rewarding. -> The Headstarter AI Fellowship was one of the best things that happened to me. I had the chance to work with Hafsa Sajid and Sunil Simar, exploring technologies like Next.js, AI integration, Pinecone, Clerk, Python and much more. We even participated in a hackathon, where we built an npm package (ai-customer-assistant) that gained over 200+ users in just 24 hours. -> Mentoring others in DSA and tech was one of the most fulfilling parts of the year. Helping others grow and overcome challenges made me appreciate the power of sharing knowledge. -> Being selected as the GDGoC Lead for my campus was an unexpected blessing. Organizing events and connecting with brilliant individuals from other campuses was an incredible experience. -> Attended different tech events like Tech Tehwaar, DevFest, Confiniti and many more, where I learned from inspiring speakers and met amazing individuals who left a lasting impact on me. -> Participating in ICPC for the first time and qualifying for the onsite round was a dream come true. -> Last but not the least, I managed to survive two more semesters :) while balancing everything else, Alhamdulillah! Looking back, I’m so thankful for every person who encouraged me especially my mentors, every opportunity that came my way, and every lesson I learned. Here’s to hoping 2025 is just as exciting and rewarding, InshaAllah. Wishing everyone a fantastic year ahead! 🙌✨ P.S. ✨ Wrapping Up 2024: A Year of Growth and Milestones ✨ As 2024 comes to a close, I’m reflecting on an incredible year filled with challenges, learning, and achievements. Here are some highlights: 🎯 Achievements: I deepened my knowledge in PHP, learning concepts like array sorting, loops, sessions, and database integration. Created impactful projects, including a book website and a user authentication system with PHP and MySQL. Participated in a hackathon, where I challenged myself by handling the frontend development of my team’s project, despite initial struggles with JavaScript. Earned acceptance into a scholarship program focused on PHP, which has significantly improved my skills. Balanced my studies, a frontend development role at Techyjaunt, and continued my backend development journey. 💡 Mentorship: A special shoutout to my mentors Joy Tari-Bagshaw Hamzat Rukayat who guided me through my tech journey. Your insights, encouragement, and belief in my potential have been invaluable. Thank you for being a constant source of motivation. ⚡ Challenges: Navigating slow internet connectivity and adapting to new tools and concepts, especially JavaScript, tested my perseverance. Balancing my studies, personal growth, and development projects wasn’t easy, but it taught me resilience and the importance of time management. 🌟 Lessons Learned: Growth happens outside your comfort zone. My GSoC Journey till now January 3rd — January 23rd, 2025 Discovering GSoC and Its Wonders The journey began with a thorough understanding of GSoC and its workings. GSoC is a global program that brings student developers into open-source software development. It offers opportunities to work on projects with mentoring organizations and gain invaluable experience in coding and community-building. Exploring Organizations I spent a good amount of time surfing through the list of participating organizations, striving to find those that resonated with my interests and skills. After evaluating multiple tech stacks and project ideas, a few organizations caught my eye: Submitty:  An open-source system for managing programming assignments, quizzes, and exams. It helps educational institutions streamline their grading processes, providing a robust and scalable solution tailored for students and educators alike. Submitty leverages tech stacks like JavaScript, PHP, Python, and Docker. Open Transit Software Foundation:  This organization focuses on developing software solutions to improve transit systems. Its projects aim to solve complex problems related to public transportation logistics and operations, utilizing tech stacks such as Java, Python, and various web technologies. ML4SCI:  As an umbrella organization under CERN, ML4SCI brings together projects that use machine learning to solve scientific problems. With a plethora of project ideas, it’s a treasure trove for anyone passionate about applying ML in the scientific domain. Diving Deeper: First Issues and Setup Challenges I decided to thoroughly explore these organizations by checking out good first issues on their repositories. Setting up each environment was a mix of excitement and hurdles: I successfully set up Submitty and joined their vibrant Zulip community. After initial challenges, I managed to set up the Open Transit Software Foundation environment and joined their Slack community. My setup for ML4SCI is ongoing, and I’m still navigating through the process of getting everything up and running. Getting Hands-On: Virtual Machines and Docker To support my development efforts, I set up Ubuntu on a Virtual Machine and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Alongside this, I installed Docker to streamline my workspace, although I still need to complete the Docker setup. Learning and Contributing I also embarked on a Coursera course to deepen my understanding of machine learning, covering topics such as Linear Regression. As I look for issues to work on in Submitty, I’m also preparing to raise issues related to my Docker setup. Reflecting on these past weeks, I’m both proud and eager. Proud of the strides I’ve made and eager for the challenges the future holds. GSoC has already taught me more than I imagined, and I can’t wait to continue this journey.
