👷 This week, we published our Annual Innovation Report for 2023-24, showcasing the significant progress made across our Network Innovation Allowance (NIA), Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and some of our Business Innovation project. 💡 The report showcases our commitment to delivering a safer, smarter, greener, and faster network through innovation, detailing our progress in key projects aligned to our Innovation Strategy. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲: ⚡️ We achieved a 100% success rate with SIF applications in the last year, with £4.8m awarded to SSEN Transmission through the Ofgem and UKRI fund. This includes our flagship Beta project, Network-DC, and our visual pre-connection tool Alpha project, REACT. ⚡️Our NIA portfolio has also managed 12 live projects over the past year, with the addition of 4 new projects, including exploring the use of robotics to monitor our high voltage equipment in our AIM High project. ⚡️Collaboration with 34 project partners across our portfolio to deliver our innovation projects, ranging from academic institutions, small innovators, large enterprises, and other electricity and gas networks. ➡️ Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/eBTc7C4g #Innovation #NetworkForNetZero #SecurePowerForGenerations

The Race to the Top 🌟 An interesting overview of the state of play in the contest between China, Europe, and the United States in making and deploying the energy technologies of the future brought by RMI in its fourth report of the X-Change series The Race to the Top. Guess what? 📣 China is in the lead in many of the key cleantech races. However, as the report details, the game is still in its early stages and Europe and the United States have a lot to play for. To get back in the game, the US and Europe will need to (1) pick up the pace of investments, and (2) speed up deployment timelines. Sometimes I suffer from "imposter syndrome." This is because of the enormous discrepancy in scale between us and our clients or customers. Over the years I have learned that this should not be a barrier to commercial engagement. Many moons ago we were approached by what was, at that time, the world's biggest power company. They asked if I would help inform their Board about V2G as they owned power transmission networks and were curious about what might happen to power demand and their ability to supply when many millions of EVs roamed earth's highways and then each night they would nestle up to the grid for succour. I was about to sign the consultancy contract when I thought about their scale and ours. Their European Innovation Director was my opposite number, so I called him to ask if he knew how small we were by comparison. He said something which has guided me every day since then. "Ash, you are a pioneer. Teach us how to be pioneers." Once our consultancy task was over, he introduced me to Japan’s largest energy company and we guided them thru their industry’s de-regulation commercial opportunities That man and I still work together, almost twenty years later. In recent years we have been asked to service large, regulated utilities. That early experience has paid off as we trot alongside them encouraging them and enabling them to explore the very limits of electro-magnetic innovation in the power quality space. Today I found myself rubbing shoulders on a virtual round table with their Regulator and their Government's Innovation enabling body, plus many leading players in the water sector as equals. So, my message to young-buck SMEs starting out, look into a pool while still a kitten entity. You will see the “Tiger” that you will shortly become. “Tired and happy” or “tired but happy” … I’m going for “tired and happy.” As I sit here on this Thursday afternoon, reflecting on another successful PCIM, I’m filled with a sense of accomplishment. It’s been an exciting three days, a whirlwind of catching up with colleagues from around the world, meeting new potential customers, and reconnecting with long-time partners and friends in our power electronics community. The show was a success! Our stand looked fantastic and was bustling with activity. Kicking things off, we energized our Semikron Danfoss stakeholders about our Solutions strategy. The enthusiasm around the potential of the SiC SKiiP and the next generation of power electronic stacks was palpable. They wanted us to follow up if we managed to start the process of getting certain OEMs to rethink their approach – to consider buying a stack rather than developing their own inverter/converter blocks. Also, whether our financial arguments, accelerated time-to-market, minimized risk, circularity, or our SiC expertise and buying power (which aspects) resonated the most with our visitors. Yesterday, we had engaging discussions with several ambitious companies in the Green Hydrogen space. Two main topics fired up our conversations: our “Time-to-Profit” concept and claims, and the advantages of Silicon Carbide-based stacks from both a Time-to-Market perspective and our SiC expertise and scale due to our automotive module business. Today provided a perfect end to the show. I caught up with some familiar faces in the quieter Thursday afternoon lull. A mix of planned sessions and serendipitous meetings in the morning gave me a boost of energy. Now though, I am “tired and happy.” PCIM 2024 was a great event, and I’m looking forward to the exciting opportunities ahead. If you attended, what were your highlights? Great meeting with Dr. Yi Ren and Dr. Sing Yang Chiam from the Singapore Battery Consortium (SBC) yesterday, along with my co-founder Omid. We explored exciting opportunities for Voltavate and SBC to collaborate. SBC is doing a fantastic job bringing together battery stakeholders in #Singapore and beyond to drive innovation across the industry. With the recent #National_Battery_Strategy in #Australia, the #Singapore_Australia_Green_Economy_Agreement (GEA), and #Australia's abundant natural resources essential for battery manufacturing, there are significant opportunities for collaboration between the two countries in advancing battery technologies and green innovation. 📢 📢 📢 Check the upcoming event for the SDV community --> The TechNexus Programme wish to welcome you to their upcoming ICE workshop on Wednesday 2nd October! 📌 This workshop provides an interim exchange format in the scope of the TechNexus Programme: Cross-disciplinary bridging technologies in complex and critical systems. The workshop features speakers from the European Commission, Chips JU and a range of experts from the complex and critical systems domains. 📌 The focus of the workshop is on technology integration for dependable systems which is a cross-disciplinary and challenging topic to address. Dependable systems relate to a large proportion of national infrastructure (automotive, health, manufacturing, space, energy, etc) and the target for many of the new technologies emerging. All parties of the complex and critical systems ecosystem are really needed to broach this challenge, the diverse technology contributors, production line managers, policy makers and end users.
