Profitable, sustainable AND fashionable? It’s possible. I’ve been working with this spunky startup, Brainspitle: “a fashion brand focused on raising the global temperature with swag, not carbon emissions.” It’s owners are young, women, entrepreneurial, fashion-forward, and out to change the way we buy and impact the planet. Check ‘em out.

The Seam: another promise in the repair industry at scale. Is it the answer to the #underconsumptioncore trend on TikTok? The Seam, a UK startup, was born from the rising awareness of fast fashion's environmental impact and the urgent need for sustainable practices in the fashion industry. Crazily, 85% of textiles end up in landfills each year. And yes, you can change this with companies like TheSeam. This isn’t just a smart business move; it’s a game-changer for the environment and your wardrobe. By making high-quality repair services easy to access, they’re helping people extend the life of their garments, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. They’ve partnered with the likes of NET-A-PORTER & COS. The Seam is setting a new standard in the industry by valuing quality and longevity. So, next time you think about tossing that torn shirt, remember, they got you seamed. P.S. Fascinated by the business of luxury? You’ll love my newsletter. While I often talk about how degrowth is the answer to many of our problems in the fashion industry, I recently sat down with Nicolaj and Ditte Reffstrup, the cofounders of Ganni A/S, who offered me another perspective. Degrowth is a great idea, they say, but in practice investors will stay away from brands that don’t have a viable plan for growth — and degrowth brands will struggle to compete in the market economy. This will make it impossible to steal market share from real polluters like Shein, that are growing at record pace. Their solution instead is to be obsessive about building an environmentally responsible business. Six years ago, they developed an ambitious 44 point checklist of things to tackle including 👗Decarbonizing 👖Replacing toxic dyes in the supply chain with nontoxic alternatives (with one pair of boots, this was impossible, so Ganni simply stopped making them and lost $500,000 in revenue.) 👚Investing in new material startups that are significantly better for the environment Importantly, the LVMH-backed private equity firm L Catterton acquired a majority stake in Ganni, while allowing the brand to invest a significant chunk of its revenue into sustainability initiatives. Now it is scaling fast, edging out less sustainable brands. The fashion industry is overproducing at mind blowing rates. How we do stop this flood of clothes that is consuming valuable resources, spewing carbon into the atmosphere, and ending up in landfills? I’m not sure. Perhaps we need many different solutions. Whatever the case, I support businesses that are committed to reducing their impact as much as humanly possible.

In sustainable fashion circles - especially on here where it's more brand/ startup/ conference focused - we so often talk about the new tech solutions, the apps, and the hot new materials and inventions that are supposedly going to supercharge the circular fashion economy. But I put it to you that a lot of the solutions are actually the old ones - buy less, make it better quality and repair it often. Not sexy enough? Maybe this colourful interview with my local cobbler can help with that! https://lnkd.in/gJVnfb5U

How to pivot or evolve by looking to your core why to source your creative motivation. How could you expand to fulfill your why on new levels, for greater value? What an amazing time at State Forty Eight Foundation / State Forty Eight Entrepreneur speaker series. Amazing energy, supportive community, and inspiring talks. Reminding me to always dig to the why, the essence of any endeavor I come across. This unfolded in a conversation with Althea from RESALE THERAPY, L.L.C.. We spoke about the business, where Althea and her daughter resell vintage clothing from "Raghouses" - places where Textile waste comes to get a new life. She mentioned that they're pivoting due to their retail location lease becoming untenable. When talking to Althea about the ultimate why for the business, she spoke about the need for more sustainable fashion practices, where we don't have to extractively source virgin / plastic-based materials. Althea was figuring out how to stay afloat while continuing to grow their impact to shift the fashion system instead of just making a small dent. We surfaced a potential where she can actually integrate into the fast fashion industry to support them in using recycled clothes as part of their offerings, opening potential for shifting how sourcing works on a systemic scale. This shift represents an evolution of their offering with a service stacked onto the product offering. While this service of "recycled fashion sourcing for modern fashion brands" is a separate activity from her current selling of textiles, it expands upon the core "why" of creating a more sustainable fashion industry. Because it's sourced from this core "why", it can shift to match the specific needs of the modern fashion industry without compromising on it's purpose. It's so cool to see people who're executing on their ambitions and dream with them about their potential for tangible systemic change. Thanks Althea for the amazing conversation. It was great to see you as well Enrique - and shout out to Melody for representing the Hopi people as the latest board member for State Forty Eight Foundation. Gratitude to Michael Spangenberg for putting this all together, I'm excited for the next 3 speaker series! On top of this, we also dreamed up a collaboration around a future music video for one of my unreleased songs - "Came Thru Drippin". Stay tuned :)

Join us for the new episode of Watt’s Up With Startups with Emin Askerov! In this episode, Emin invited Tanya Mulesa, an impact entrepreneur and an advocate for sustainable fashion. Watch episode #4 here: https://lnkd.in/dGa5EHwm Fashion, for the most part, is unsustainable. Mass market brands and fast fashion generate a lot of waste and emissions while promoting overconsumption. Are there any mechanisms to make fashion more sustainable? There are two ways to change the situation: regulatory measures or changing consumer behaviour. But regulations are often slow, so it’s up to us, as consumers, to start doing better. Hear from Tanya Mulesa, co-founder of Walk It and CICON.App, two UK-based startups dedicated to making fashion more sustainable. Having spent 12 years building a career in sustainable energy, Tanya realized that fashion is one of the least sustainable industries in the world. She set out to change the situation by founding a first-of-a-kind convertible shoe brand and designing an app for collecting data on the lifecycle impact of luxury garments. Find out how passion for energy transition can enable change in the seemingly unrelated fashion industry. I help Personal Brands to get Customers through Design | Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator Expert | I can Design what you Imagine | All about Graphic Design
"Stop dreaming and start doing." These words encapsulate the transformational power of action. While dreams provide direction, it's the steps we take that turn them into reality. Let's explore this concept with a real-life example. Consider Emma, a young entrepreneur with a passion for sustainable fashion. For years, she envisioned creating an eco-friendly clothing line. Her dreams were filled with designs, fabrics, and a commitment to environmental consciousness. However, her dreams remained on paper until one day, she decided to stop dreaming and start doing. Emma took the first step by researching sustainable materials and manufacturing practices. She attended workshops, connected with experts, and designed prototypes. Her determination led her to launch her brand, and the response was overwhelming. Emma's decision to take action turned her dreams into a thriving business that not only fulfilled her vision but also contributed positively to the world. 1. #ActionTaker 2. #TurningDreamsIntoReality 3. #EntrepreneurialJourney 4. #TakeTheFirstStep 5. #GoalGetter 6. #DareToDo 7. #ProfessionalProgress 8. #PassionProject 9. #StartDoing 10. #SuccessThroughAction
