Did you know that The International Space Station, is using ammonia as their refrigerant? They use it to keep the space station safe and productive: “Ammonia was selected because it is the best heat transport fluid that meets all of NASA's thermal performance and safety requirements (toxicity, flammability, freeze temperature, stability, cost and successful commercial and industrial use)”, Jerry Wright, NASA. Ammonia has the potential to conquer many other areas. Whether it’s air conditioning of airports, sports centers or office buildings or it’s used for high-performance heat pumps - ammonia is the first choice for systems with refrigeration/heating capacities of about 300 kW / 85 TR and more. Because it is so efficient, it uses less energy and even the maintenance demands of an ammonia facility are perceptibly lower. So even if your demands aren’t quite as complex as the ones of a space station, ammonia will still be the optimal choice. It offers twice the capacity compared with synthetic refrigerants and has the perfect thermodynamic properties for many heating and cooling demands.
