Launched in February 2021, More Perfect Union’s coverage has garnered more than 500 million video views and 2+ million followers and subscribers.  We’re hiring a Vertical Video Editor Fellow to join our team. The Vertical Video Editor Fellow will work closely with the social media team as well as our reporters and producers to conceptualize, script, produce, and edit news-driven videos specifically for TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts.   Editing skills are essential for the role, but the ideal candidates will have passion for and experience in all aspects of video creation: ideation, scripting, and pre-production; production (including field recording and on-camera work); and post-production. They will be working on a range of video formats, including breaking news coverage, on-camera explainers and skits, and concise, shareable versions of our longer-form content.  The Vertical Video Editor Fellow must be immersed in and excited about the process of telling stories through video, with the technical and narrative skills to create powerful stories that hook viewers and keep people watching to the end. Inspired by some skilled AE’s turned monster Editors I've been lucky to work with Tyler Wong, Eric Scott and Gia Viscuso. An Assistant Editor (AE) is but not limited to... ORGANIZED. A technical wizard. Problem solver. Patient. Detail Oriented. Stellar communicator. So organized. Fast, but doesn’t take the place of efficiency. Manager of footage, systems, logs and schedules that allow the rest of the editorial staff to shine. Helps producers not have panic attacks. Works well with others, doesn't miss deadlines, embraces the graveyard shift. Level-headed, especially in chaos they didn’t create ("We'd like to premiere two weeks earlier, starting yesterday"). Life saver. Ever been cranking away at an edit and it just disappears? Who ya gonna call? More than button pushers and footage organizers. If you are hiring an AE, they're probably just starting out and want to do more, they want to create, they are looking for their shot.  Most AE’s I know, want to edit. Most editors I know started as AE’s. They are storytellers. So make room in your schedule for them to grow, get dirty with footage, fold them into the mix beyond outputs and footage dumps. Allow them to be part of the creative hive. They will be excited and motivated to do well, your editors will be happy with their process, want to teach and perhaps you have stumbled upon your new favorite editor for the next decade. More new media companies and brands expanding their content production need the above. It’s a hyper ORGANIZED coordinator, tech-master, manager, artist and team player all rolled into one. As traditional staffs downsize, roles require more hats and creators are building their own media empires fast, your AE is a major building block to your success and an editor with an AE background will save you more than you know. Hiring video editor!! You must have seen posts like this often, whether on Instagram, Facebook, or Discord servers. You immediately message them after seeing the post, hoping to secure a position as a video editor or in whichever field you are interested. However, it's not just you; many others are also DMing them with requests like, "Sir, please hire me." Standing out is a huge deal. You need to stand out among 100 people who are DMing. When your DM reaches them, they should feel like, "Wow, there is something special about this person." Your portfolio should be unique and impressive. It should show your experience and skills effectively. The person hiring doesn’t have the time to read your entire message, so explain in just a few words what you can and cannot do. Make your message stand out from the 99 others. Send messages to me and let me know how your messages look when you send them to a potential employer. I'll tell you how they should be structured. I’m not an expert in this field, but I’ll share whatever I know to help you.
