An Open Letter to Hospitality Professionals and HRs Dear Professionals in the Hospitality Industry, Have you ever considered that your experience in hospitality might just make you the perfect candidate for a PA or EA role? If you’re from the hospitality world, you already know the hustle: managing expectations, anticipating needs, and handling high-pressure situations—all with a smile on your face. These are exactly the traits that make exceptional PAs and EAs. Think of those chaotic days when the restaurant’s fully booked, or the hotel’s overflowing with guests. You juggle requests, troubleshoot issues on the fly, and manage crises with grace. That’s what being a PA/EA is all about—handling whatever comes your way and making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. You’ve spent years mastering the art of service, and that attention to detail, combined with the ability to make quick, sound decisions, translates beautifully into the corporate world. For HRs out there; Don’t overlook hospitality professionals when scouting for PA/EA roles. These individuals have already honed their ability to work under intense pressure, multitask effectively, and remain proactive. They bring something extra to the table—a natural aptitude for client relations, an ability to anticipate needs before they’re communicated, and an innate sense of professionalism. However, to my fellow hospitality professionals, here’s a quick word of advice: learn to say no. In hospitality, the customer is always right, and the instinct is to please everyone. But in a PA/EA role, setting boundaries is crucial for keeping priorities straight. Saying no is not about refusing to help, it’s about managing your time effectively and ensuring that the most important tasks are given the attention they deserve. So, HR professionals—next time you’re filling a PA/EA position, take a closer look at those with a hospitality background. Whether you are new to hospitality, feeling stuck in your current role, or even a manager looking to support your team's growth – this article is for you. It can be frustrating when you are passionate about hospitality but are not sure how to chart a clear path forward. Let us change that. Hospitality is not like other industries. The skills you develop here translate across roles in ways that might surprise you. I have seen housekeepers become exceptional concierges, line cooks transition to menu design, and countless other success stories in this dynamic industry. Whether your dream is managing a luxury resort, designing innovative restaurant concepts, or something entirely unexpected, this industry can take you there. The possibilities are truly there! Section 1: Entry-Level Employees Subheading: Building a Strong Foundation Every guest interaction shapes your communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. These are valuable in ANY hospitality role, and beyond. Positions that might seem entry-level can lead to surprising places. Front desk agents might excel in Guest Relations, and I have even seen housekeepers with a knack for guest interaction become fantastic concierges. Seek out a more experienced colleague whose work you admire. Do not be afraid to ask questions and express your interest in growth. Section 2: Mid-Career Workers Subheading: Breaking Out of a Rut What are you truly good at AND enjoy within your current role? Focus on building those strengths further. Do not wait for your review to discuss your future. Ask your manager, 'What skills do I need for [Desired Role]?' A shift from restaurant service to event coordination might not seem obvious, but both require attention to detail and guest interaction. Sometimes, the path upwards is actually sideways. Learning the operational side of events after excelling in guest-facing roles can make you a well-rounded candidate for management. Section 3: Managers Subheading: Nurturing Your Team's Potential Feedback should not just be about today's tasks. Ask open-ended questions like, 'Where do you see yourself within hospitality long-term?' That employee who always defuses tense guest situations might have a knack for leadership, even if they are not vocal about it. Think beyond traditional training. Could your budget cover someone attending an industry conference, even for a day? The inspiration and connections gained can be career-changing. Simple initiatives like a day shadowing, or even facilitating brief 'job swaps' between departments can spark unexpected potential. These have led to amazing transitions within our own team!
