Just over the past weekend one of our leading authors Dr. Ana Mijic presented a new paper at the 8th Conference on Migration Research in Austria. The new piece is developed under the interdisciplinary project 'The Art of Arriving' and focuses on reflexivity in migration research, which is one of the main methodological tenets applied throughout the project. While the new paper is being prepared for publication I invite you to read about "The Art of Arriving" (here: https://lnkd.in/dcwmPDqM), and our early attempt with Olena Tkalich to apply reflexivity to our work as researchers. In an article published last year in Commons we apply autoethnography "to acknowledge how deeply sensitive and personal research in sociology may be, and hint at why and how this aspect can be integrated into the research design and reflect on the findings." The article is available in Ukrainian and in English. Read us: українською: https://lnkd.in/dYefyH_v in English: https://lnkd.in/d5MNUTQe

What can help to spread new ideas? An Award ? One year ago, I learned that I won the Environmental Sociology Best Paper Prize 2022 for my work on sustainability through the prism of time. I really felt grateful and honored. This price was not only a recognition of my work, started back in 2017, on the topic of time and sustainability, it was also a recognition of the idea developed in the paper that we need to "bring time back in". Time inconsistencies is indeed probably one of the greatest challenge in the Anthropocene. The article is now available on open-access (https://lnkd.in/d_RAbH6). What is new in this paper ? It advances our ability to interrogate relationships between ‘natural’ and ‘social’ time through development of a unique conceptual framework. It makes a distinction between two dimensions of time that are often conflated in the literature: the ontological dimension (what is time?) and the epistemological dimension (how do we develop knowledge claims about time?). Time can be conceived, perceived, imagined and planned. This ‘epistemological quartet’ draws attention to the importance of how time is abstracted, experienced, apprehended and manipulated. Exploring both the ontology and epistemology of time is critical both to understand environmental threats and to inform societal responses.

My second book of a trilogy has just been published https://lnkd.in/eaP63B6E This describes a new paradigm that was tested in Nicaragua. it is new mode of coordination, systemic coordinated inter-organizational networks, SCIONs that can give sociology much more power and influence and help solve problems such as inequality and polarization. The success of this paradigm is described in this book and in a book review https://lnkd.in/eHkkx7cx I would like to hear about other examples of SCIONs like this one.

Qualitative research is enriched by a variety of philosophical perspectives and delves into diverse aspects of human life, such as culture, expression, beliefs, morality, life stress, and imagination. This field has been shaped by different branches of philosophy and has experienced historical transitions and paradigm shifts. While some scholars suggest that the adoption of paradigms may hinder philosophical engagement within the research community, it's important to recognize the evolving nature of qualitative research. The roots of qualitative research can be traced back to early anthropology and sociology, where scholars employed immersive methods to understand human culture and behavior. Over time, the field has progressed, with significant contributions such as grounded theory in the 1960s and the emergence of feminist and critical theories in the 1980s. Today, qualitative research continues to expand, integrating digital tools and new methodologies to capture complex human experiences. It remains a powerful tool for exploring the depth of social phenomena. Join us in exploring the past to enhance the future of qualitative research #QualitativeResearch #ResearchMethods #HistoryOfResearch

New published book edited by Ronald Hartz and colleagues. The De Gruyter Handbook of Organizing Economic, Ecological and Societal Transformation, edited by Hartz and colleagues is published in print and electronically. The De Gruyter Handbook of Organizing Economic, Ecological and Societal Transformation, edited by Elke Weik (University of Southern Denmark), Christopher Land (Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK) and Ronald Hartz (Technische Universität Ilmenau, Management/Organization Group), was published in print and is now available as an electronic or physical resource direct from the publishers. https://lnkd.in/da3qAzht . The handbook gathers contributors from different disciplines of the social sciences, such as organization and management studies, sociology, anthropology and political science, to constructively discuss the kinds of transformations we need to see in coming years. These transformations concern the way we work, produce and consume but also the way in which we think about work, production and consumption. In an explicit rejection of the demand that the social sciences provide quick fixes, the contributors of this handbook discuss possible solutions in a critical and comprehensive manner and with an eye to both their environmental and societal implications. The handbook is divided into four parts: Opening up futures, Techno-economic transformations at work, Sustainable environmental transformation, and Radical democratic futures. The handbook is of interest to all critical academics interested in constructive suggestions regarding necessary societal transformations.

History repeating itself. This is why public education is important. This is why diversity, equity, and inclusion policies matter. This is why the social studies are important academic subjects. This is why comparative sociology, psychology, anthropology, and all those other often called soft sciences are needed - there’s nothing soft about reminding the human race that we need to keep learning and evolving. This is why we need to be electing leaders who are decent and have a strong North Star compass. We cannot go through another episode in human history where we destroy each other because of race, color, creed, or belief. Otherwise, what’s the point of being here as a species if we never learn?

***FREE PhD WEBINAR*** INTRODUCTION TO INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH Wednesday 30 October 2024 at 8:00PM (GMT +8) Interdisciplinarity or interdisciplinary research involves the combination of two or more academic disciplines into one research activity. Interdisciplinary research draws knowledge from several other fields like sociology, anthropology, psychology, economics etc. It is about creating something by thinking across boundaries. It is a mode of research by individuals or teams that integrates information, data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and/or theories from two or more bodies of specialised knowledge to advance fundamental understanding or to solve problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline or field of research practice. In this webinar, Dr Craig J Selby will talk about principles of undertaking interdisciplinary research, and share examples of experience from his own research, to help you explore the potential of the approach. SEATS ARE LIMITED. This is a FREE webinar; to secure a seat, register NOW. DIRECT zoom link found in comments section. We hope to see you there! #AcademicResearch #TheThirdDegree #PhD #PhDJourney #ResearchMethods #ResearchMethodology #InterdisciplinaryResearch #AcademicWriting #PostGraduateResearch
