Here a recessed, trough-shaped section of the E45, located in between two road tunnels in central Gothenburg, Sweden. The air-quality situation is difficult to predict, with the pollution levels in the two tunnels "communicating" with each other via the trough. An example of a complex urban air pollution challenge where the EQUA tunnel simulation software IDA Tunnel provides a useful engineering tool. #EQUA_Tunnel #IDA_Tunnel

USBR Type IX baffled apron, a well known structure used for energy dissipation. Recently one of my contacts posted a video of an operational structure of the same type. I was astonished that only 3 or four comments, were acquainted with the structure. The structure is not new, it is at least more than 70y old, with full curves for design and sizing. I am sorry to say that a lot of young engineers don't bother to read the history of the discipline before introducing new ideas, that are old. It reminds me of an old Sci-fi "New Arrivals, Old Encounters, by Brian Aldiss". Please, check the previous work in Hydraulic Structures, before wasting your time in testing what is already known.

Launching Large Ships into Water When launching large vessels on small slipways, several important risks need to be carefully managed to avoid accidents. Shallow water can cause vessels to run aground or collide with obstacles, while the stern can sink more than expected due to weight. Indeed, when the water level is high, the impact of launching is mitigated by the volume of fluid, but when it's low, the water disturbance due to launching becomes very significant, and it's essential to assess it as it can cause the boat to overturn. It's important to check the slope of the slipway for smooth operation, as it affects the boat's speed when entering the water. Additionally, consider the impact of waves created by the boat, which can disrupt both the launch and the surrounding environment. Without proper planning and accurate simulations, these issues can lead to significant repair costs, delays, and operating losses, highlighting the need for safety and precision. CFD is crucial for optimizing ship launches by simulating free-surface two-phase flows and complex fluid-structure interactions. By calculating key parameters such as ship speed, induced wave height, squat, and hull impacts, engineers can assess the slipway slope, ensuring the ship moves safely away from the coast without overturning, while also anticipating potential environmental damage. Parametric rolling is a complex phenomenon that occurs when a ship experiences the sudden onset of large, violent rolls from side to side. It can happen very suddenly. Therefore, it is important to recognize the early warning signs, and to have the tools and procedures in place to forecast and continuously monitor the sea conditions. Modern container vessels, which have narrow hulls that widen into large decks, are particularly vulnerable to this rolling effect. As container ships travel the world’s oceans, exposed to a wide range of sea conditions, parametric rolling remains an ever-present risk.
