Metallurgical testwork highlights simple and efficient upgrading of REO! Larvotto Resources Limited has achieved promising assay results through drilling at the Merivale South (Eyre Project) prospect near Norseman. The results have revealed high percentages of valuable rare earth elements (REE) hosted in ionic clay, making this deposit an enticing prospect. In 2023, Mark Wild a Senior Metallurgist at Independent Metallurgical Operations (IMO) , conducted initial sighter testwork at Metallurgy Pty Ltd on a sample batch to understand the ore and assess the feasibility of liberating the rare earth minerals through a mild desorption process. Following this, Wild recommended cyclosizer testwork, which indicated that 82% of the rare earth elements were present in the undersize fraction. A further upgrading of TREO by a factor of 1.07:1 was achieved from the sample analysed which had an average TREO grade of >5000ppm TREO. Samples of specific sizes were then sent to Melissa Narbey and her team at AXT PTY LTD for TIMA mineral characterization. This analysis revealed, among other findings, that the majority of the mineralisation containing REE was found in fluorocarbonate minerals from the bastnäsite group, which is one of the largest sources of cerium and other REEs. Future steps at Metallurgy Pty Ltd will involve leaching testwork under various pH, temperature, and acid conditions to assess leach amenability and reagent consumption. Larvotto Resources Managing Director Ron Heeks commented in January 2024:  “This recent round of testwork has added significantly to our knowledge of the deposit and its mineralogy. A highlight is the simple and efficient upgrading of REO by hydrometallurgical processes. A good understanding of the exact mineralogy gained from TIMA studies will now allow us to target extractive metallurgical processes in the next phase of testwork. The significant reduction in calcite, which is a high acid consuming mineral, during upgrading is also extremely positive. APT's range of multi-mineral tabling plants have proven to be a huge breakthrough for the recovery of minerals containing copper, cobalt, tin, tantalite, tungsten, lead, lithium and more. The gravity process is simple and much more affordable than complex flotation methods, allowing you to start recovering your mineral at a relatively low capital cost. The design as a whole is ergonomic, with the plants intended to be installed on a terraced site to ensure ease of feed into the crushers, and to utilise gravity transfer of the product as far as possible. The crushing module makes use of an APT RD impact crusher, designed as an early liberation unit using high energy input to fracture the host rock along the grain boundary, liberating the mineral whilst avoiding over-grinding. The crushed product is then concentrated over a robust and high quality shaking table, in order to achieve the highest gravity recovery possible. I couldn’t agree more. These ultrafine slimes, less than 10 microns, are literally “the elephant in the room” especially for gravity separation. We investigated the effect on the Reflux Classifier some years ago, Carpenter et al, 2019. https://lnkd.in/g-ScbkZd Below a critical concentration the separation is consistent and predictable. Beyond that concentration an exponential viscosity increase applies. Either the slimes need to be removed or the system sufficiently diluted. Impacts can be far greater than “15%”. Desliming at 38 microns causes excessive metallurgical losses and conventional approaches can still be unsatisfactory due to bypass. We are developing the Graviton for efficient large scale slimes removal at 10 microns. Working with FLSmidth, the new prototype should be commissioned this year.
