🤝 💡 Get to know Lisa Morey, a member of West Gate Cohort 2 working to address the materials gap for new #buildings. Between now and 2050, it is projected that the U.S. will need to build the equivalent of an entire New York City every 35 days for 35 years to keep up with the growing global population. That is going to take a lot of building #materials! Right now, cement production accounts for about 6% of all human-caused global #emissions. But Colorado Earth LLC’s sustainably produced thermal mass masonry blocks, or EcoBlox, address the need to diversify our use of #cement-based products. EcoBlox have an impressive low carbon footprint due to the fact they are made with local materials that are considered an overburden to the quarry. The blocks are unfired, energy efficient, and installation skills can be directly transferred to masons. During West Gate, Lisa will test the integration of phase change materials to enhance the operational performance of the blocks, especially in colder climates.

Call to Action: Protect Silicon Slopes from Unchecked Gravel Pit Expansion what was Senate Bill 172 has now been accompanied by HB 502 https://lnkd.in/g_VjzjQc , and these Bills pose a significant threat to the environment, property values, and quality of life in Silicon Slopes. These billa would drastically limit local oversight of gravel pit operations, allowing them to expand at will onto adjacent properties, regardless of zoning regulations. This would impact billions of dollars' worth of commercial and residential property https://lnkd.in/gpJr-65e , significantly degrade air quality, and diminish the appeal of Silicon Slopes as a tech hub. Specifically, SB 172 and HB 502 would: Grant gravel pits "expansion by right," bypassing local zoning and oversight. This could enable mines like Geneva Rock to circumvent the Draper City zoning process and expand significantly at Point of the Mountain. Additionally, Granite could open a massive new mine in Parley's Canyon near Grandeur Peak and Mount Aire. Exempt gravel operations from local land use authority. This could reanimate old zombie mines now in residential neighborhoods and would lead to uncontrolled expansion of existing mines onto adjacent properties, impacting not only aesthetics but also property values and quality of life. Increase exposure to silica dust: Gravel mines release windblown silica dust, a known carcinogen and contributor to respiratory issues, particularly harmful in the small PM2.5 size. The proximity of these mines to dense populations in windy Silicon Slopes raises major health concerns. The potential consequences of SB172 and HB502 are deeply concerning: Devaluation of billions of dollars in property: Unchecked expansion of gravel pits could significantly lower property values in surrounding areas, impacting both homeowners and businesses. Deterioration of air quality: Increased dust emissions from expanded mines could exacerbate air quality issues in Silicon Slopes, negatively impacting public health and the environment. It's not just a drying Great Salt Lake we need to fear, mines in windy areas like Point of the Mtn and Parleys will fill three counties with toxins from silica. Erosion of Silicon Slopes' appeal: Unsightly gravel pits and associated dust pollution could tarnish the image of Silicon Slopes as a desirable location for tech companies and talent. Taking action is critical! Contact your Utah State Representative. Urge them to oppose SB172 and HB502 and protect local communities, property values, and air quality. Share this information with your network. Raise awareness about the potential harm of the Bills and encourage others to take action.
