Are you ready to explore the possibilities of becoming a Martian? Our latest concept note delves into the fascinating realm of photoautotrophic humans, drawing inspiration from nature's own marvels and the challenges of space exploration. Imagine harnessing the power of photosynthesis like a plant, utilizing cosmic radiation to generate energy while emitting oxygen as a byproduct. Sound like science fiction? Think again. With the recent discovery of Ambystoma maculatum, the spotted salamander, exhibiting photosynthetic abilities through a symbiotic relationship with algae, we're presented with a remarkable blueprint for adaptation. In our concept note, we explore the potential of developing a novel algal-fungal-bacterial biofilm, mimicking nature's symbiotic relationships, to equip humans with similar photosynthetic capabilities crucial for survival in harsh extraterrestrial environments like Mars. With over 500 reads in the first week alone, our research is already sparking widespread interest and discussion. Ready to embark on this groundbreaking journey? Dive into our concept note on ResearchGate and join us at the forefront of innovative space exploration and human adaptation. 🌟🔬 https://lnkd.in/gmfjxcR5 #SpaceExploration #PhotosyntheticHumans #ConceptNote #ResearchGate

As a continuing reflection on Worldbuilding as a critical and creative tool for Futures Thinking, we'd like to feature this inspiring work of Pascal Wicht imagining future habitats spurred by the question: "What does a future look like where we successfully slow down and avert the looming abominations of collapse and extinction?" Primarily shaped by the climate concerns of his children, he aimed to visualize "a positive future for them, one that is both plausible and preferable, grounded in what we know and can achieve, with a touch of Sci-Fi." Sharing some of our reflections on this piece: Lesson #1: Understand and reflect on your own biases when conjuring futures. 🪞 The author's self-aware approach to imagining futures reminds us that we all carry our own biases and mental models for thinking about the future. How do our feelings affect the way direct our actions and influence the actions of others in shaping <name your business / interest> futures? Lesson #2: Shaping inclusive futures is a call for embracing and experiencing the other. 🤝 The author states, "our visions of future cities are often hijacked by the elite minority, with their skyscrapers and flying cars dominating the narrative for decades." His fieldwork in Jordan and exploration of ideas from North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Global South result in imagery that reflects climate disruption, poverty, regional biodiversity and (to our Global Southerners' eyes), the human dynamics that exist in communities. Lesson #3: Tap into lateral thinking. For example: in envisioning car-free cities, frame the future beyond city references or alternative mobility / infrastructure. 💡The author's own challenge with AI image generation of car-free cities (which we can attest to through our own city futures work) led to an exploration of nature-inspired ecosystems interacting with urban architecture that stretch the scenario in new ways. Thank you Katherine Diaz for sharing this provocative post! It presents visions of the future that we, and many, can relate to. It feels doable, which makes us feel hopeful 🌟 #imagination #futuresthinking #worldbuilding #aigeneratedimages #futurescenarios #slowdown #hopeforthefuture https://lnkd.in/dc-cKzqE
Recently, my children have been asking me about what the world will look like when they grow up. I often say, you can't find the futures we need on Unsplash or iStock. These futures are stuck in outdated myths of 1% high-rise buildings and flying cars. In this exploration, I attempted to answer them visually, using AI to create images of preferable futures, adding a touch of sci-fi and imagination.
