Is DeepSeek the Antagonist AI Needs to Evolve? The emergence of DeepSeek, a low-cost, open-code AI model from China, has provoked a massive correction in the price of Nvidia shares, something that was perhaps inevitable at some point anyway. However, interestingly Meta shares wobbled initially and then went up as the market worked out that as users of the technology they could benefit from lower costs. For me this feels like a natural and inevitable moment in the evolution of this technology. It’s not just another competitor—it’s an antagonist that could force the entire industry to adapt and innovate faster than ever. This is a great example of thesis, antithesis, synthesis, the theory of dialectical change whereby competing ideas fight it out and produce something stronger. In a smaller, much smaller way, in my career, I’ve seen first-hand how competition can be uncomfortable, even threatening, but also transformational. When I introduced the Primary Tenancy™ and Advanced Rent Option (ARO™) models to the lettings market, they disrupted traditional approaches. Naturally I have had to deal with pushback from the establishment but the win win result would be better outcomes for everyone involved—landlords, tenants, and agents alike, something that’s an ongoing project DeepSeek represents a similar kind of challenge to the AI space. By operating at a fraction of the cost of its Western counterparts and making its code open and accessible, it will push established players to refine their priorities and rethink their strategies. It’s not the threat itself that matters—it’s how the industry chooses to respond. Competition like this reminds us that growth often comes from pressure.
