A new study has found that 46% of gamers now list “creation, imagination and self-expression” as their main motivations for gaming. From character customization to cosplay and content creation, video games have empowered young people to explore, express and enhance their identity — nearly two thirds of gamers claim it’s easier to be their true selves behind a character. This drive for self-expression has also given rise to the phenomenon of virtual YouTubers, or #VTubers. These digital personas represent the first step in taking virtual character expression out of games and into social media environments. Gaming isn't just about fun anymore; it's becoming a sophisticated data-driven manipulation. Some games collect detailed player data and use algorithms to tweak the game's difficulty and rewards, pushing players to spend more. This tactic, known as 'dynamic balancing' or 'personalisation,' often operates under the radar. For example, if you’re progressing too fast, the game might suddenly become harder or reduce your chances of winning to make you spend. If you’re a big spender, you might find offers becoming more expensive. This manipulation creates an illusion of randomness and fairness, but in reality, the odds are often intentionally skewed against you. Nexon's recent $9 million fine for manipulating loot box odds highlights this issue, but many other studios engage in similar practices, prioritising profit over player experience. As gamers and developers, we need to push for transparency and ethical practices in the industry.
