Powerful post from Doug Lewin on the big steps Texas needs to take to help ensure the disastrous Hurricane Beryl blackouts never happen again.    As Doug points out, only interconnected networks of rooftop solar panels, batteries, smart appliances, and other “distributed energy resources” (i.e. microgrids) will protect families and communities from extreme weather and grid failures. Even better, microgrids also lower consumers’ bills and strengthen the power grid.   Federal tax credits have slashed the cost of solar panels and batteries by 30%. Additional state funds are supposed to be paying for microgrids for critical infrastructure. Time to put in the 40” steel pipeline to bring clean water from Bear/Lambly Lake to feed the intakes in the ditch at Powers and via upper Smith Creek above the BC Hydro transmission line (with forestry sprinklers to put out close proximity wildfires) to cross connect with Lakeview Heights Irrigation districts previous water mains with a very substantial increase in water quality and pressure , with the 40” steel pipeline running down the previously cleared and grubbed 12 km right of way this would have removed the approximately 4-6% evaporation factor of the water running down Powers creek to the intake pond at Coventry crescent in Glenrosa, it would also have allowed Jackpine lake which has a high colour content to be used for the 6 cubic feet per minute down Powers creek for fish flow to be compliant with fisheries, for the pipline itself for the last steep drop in elevation before the intake pond the water pressure developed would be in order of about 850 pounds per square inch which is unworkable so rather than putting in PRV’s the plan was to put in inline Co-Generation generators to produce electricity from the system- of which could be put into the power grid or inexpensively send the electricity back up the hill to the Jackpine Lake turnoff to power the Ozonation & Chlorination station to allow for the full 2 1/2 contact time that is needed for chlorine to do its job of disinfecting then dissipate to a negligible 2 1/2 parts per million at pipes end past households, the key components to allow for a steady manageable growth of about 4.5 % growth in the area was to put in an intake and raise Bear Lake (quite clean water feed streams are over bedrock) up by about 25’ in depth basically doubling the storage capacity, detour Bear main up and around on existing FSR’s , ensure the Sandburg ditch was kept clear to take care of the runoff of about 250 square mile watershed which incorporated Tadpole lake into the equation of water supply, Upper Glenrosa could have been serviced with 14” water mains for road side domestic service and full pressure fire hydrants for fire protection as a stub pipe was planned for Carre Road, 2 of the biggest benefits would be (a) developers would have paid off the entire cost of the pipeline by now (b) and when the power line was compromised the pipeline would have been producing electrical power using the outdated concept of gravity feed of which has been proven as dependable as gravity itself - if any one would like to view the complete set of engineering plans please feel free to contact me and no you cannot take them away for destruction, please excuse any typos as AI can be a bit tedious on a smart phone

I woke up today with hot coffee and a hot shower. How many of us take this morning routine for granted? Well im Puerto Rico this week, 100 thousand people didn't know if they we're the next day. And there hasn't even been a hurricane like Maria or Irma. Post Maria, everyone who could afford to set up solar plus batteries. In a territory where the average income is less than half of the lowest state, the economic hurdle is the largest. #netmetering allows Puerto Rican's to be able to afford to access solar and storage. There is no reason law 10 should be repelled or amended since it passed unanimously across all parties and houses in Puerto Rico. Law 10 is the will of the people. Puerto Rican's have followed due process in order to ensure the one policy working to help keep the lights on is protected until 2031. The EPA’s Clean Power Plan 2.0 continues to generate opposition. The plan targets power plants that use fossil fuels, and implementation will almost certainly mean that many existing facilities driven by fossil fuels will have to close and new ones scrapped. Under the new agreement Louisiana loses. In 2025, New Orleans does not have to be part of this and can claim energy independence. Power should rest with the consumers not corporate or special interests. I am the only candidate that can protect NOLA from big utility passing its fines onto the consumer because I’m the only one with a plan of action to create the infrastructure ecosystem necessary. How will we do this? 1) Purchase Entergy New Orleans to create a true public option for power and protect our communities from corporate price increases. 2) Create power battery bank facilities throughout NOLA to help alleviate costs to our consumers and decrease stress on the grid. 3) We have an incredible river—we will harness it and finally have hydropower. This will further reduce grid stress, provide additional power to battery bank facilities, and in theory could provide free utilities in the event of a hurricane or natural disaster which would help our communities recover after disaster. Potentially, waiving utility costs for up to 2-3 months. 4) S&WB to be absorbed by Public Works or run through a private corporation. If privatization occurs that company will have to agree to non-predatory practices, distributions to the city of New Orleans, and have to agree to being audited by third party auditors. 5) All of this can be accomplished through grants, corporate sponsorship, oil / gas tax redistribution, city budget re-allocations, and other channels that will not put the burden on our citizens. #nola #neworleans #hope

Agree- We basically dodged what is now #HurricaneErnesto, yet large swaths of the island are still without power. And we’re just starting this hurricane season, which has been forecasted as extremely active. The grid must be fixed. Particularly the grid at the distribution level. There are billions of #FEMA dollars for that end that continue unspent. Standby fossil generators can help some, but that’s not a real solution. My family is but one of just 130,000 families in #PuertoRico protected with clean, resilient solar and batteries from all kinds of outages. That is a real solution. My wish is that as close as possible to 100% of households in PR are equally protected. This is why Law 10 of 2024, which legally secures current true #netmetering, is so critical, as it is THE policy that makes it economically possible for people of all stripes -especially #LMI folks- to install solar & storage to save their lives and livelihoods. And it’s the only policy that has resulted in any movement away from dirty, expensive, imported fossil fuels as required by law, particularly Law 17 of 2019 which mandates 40% renewables by next year; yet we are nowhere even close. This is why we respectfully ask again that the #FOMB withdraw its federal lawsuit against the will of the People of Puerto, as expressed unanimously by our elected officials, so that we keep net metering intact at least until 2030. #TSErnesto

It is the fact in 1969 that the territory of Labrador didn't have the technology and funds to build the Churchill fall hydro generation station. Today the 5,400 MW turbines generated green electricity feed the Quebec and New England, which eliminating millions tons of CO2 if it need to be generated from fossil fuel. It is easier to raise the dispute after decade of the project when the initial contract not appropriately build in the inflation factor. However, build it earlier is better than sit down and continuing do the lip work. Churchill fall generation station is still a major financial contributor to the Labrador with small population. Instead of like the other largest hydropower project such as Ingo Fall in the DMC, only 1.8 GW of the 38.9 GW hydropower potential been conquest, left the world most destitute population left behind the civilization.

To those who haven't gone solar: I understand. 🤔 I can only imagine… …how annoying it might be to have everyone come over in the aftermath of a hurricane walking out from their houses to assess the damage realizing that yours is the only house on the block with power. 🔋 …the disorienting waves of confusion, as you open your electric bill and see a minus sign in front of a dollar sign, accompanied by the text: "THIS IS NOT A BILL. DO NOT PAY." 📬 …the frustration faced by other flummoxed, slack-jawed homeowners as they realize they now have *extra* money, and must now shoulder the burden of deciding where to invest it. 🪙 …the relief that comes with the freedom from these decisions, as utilities continue to extract a minimum of 6% more wealth each year, for the rest of your life, relieving you of any excess capital. 💸 I understand. You haven't called me. You'll never call me. And that's ok. 🚫 Solar is not for everyone.
