Who are you in the room?
As ET continues to wrap up our annual goal process, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about our personal development goals. Normally these exercises focus on the job someone wants, the position or role they want to take.
In ET, we also try to focus on 'who' they want to be - how they want to be seen as a leader, engineer, or service desk technician. We talk a lot about the ‘presence’ each of us has in meetings, when presenting, or in collaboration with teams across the globe. Each employee is responsible to determine who they want to be, it’s a personal decision. Our goal in ET is to then empower and enable every employee to achieve that vision through our development plans.
As you grow in your career, the job you want may change a number of times as you get exposed to new technologies, new business areas, or new industries.
Who you are doesn’t change, it carries with you across any of these roles.
It’s been incredibly rewarding working with all the different teams over the last few weeks going through this exercise, challenging them to think of the type of leader or engineer they want to be.
So the core question remains – 'who' do you want to be as you grow in your career?
