Life taught me more than school ever could. I broke away from what everyone told me. Education is your future, goes the saying. Here's my unconventional journey. I grew up in a working-class family. Everyone emphasized the importance of education. But my real lessons came from life outside the classroom. Traditional paths never suited me. My journey was tough and filled with doubt. But it led me to an unexpected passion—numbers. The turning point came when I realized 👉 numbers weren't just about balancing books. They were about unlocking potential. A crucial internship changed everything. My mentor saw potential in me that I hadn’t seen. He guided me onto a path I’d never imagined. Full of opportunities and growth. I climbed the ladder from junior accountant to regional CFO. From Brazil to Beirut, my career grew. I learned that finance isn’t just about crunching numbers. Straight Up & Quirky Growth Strategist - Mentor, for scaling entrepreneurs who long for strategic plans, guidance and accountability.
Life experience vs Education I’d like to share a humorous anecdote about the ongoing debate between life experience and education. At 18, I chose the path of "life experience" after dropping out of school, and it turned out to be a game-changer. As my business began thriving with a multi-million euro revenue, we attracted investors to fuel our growth. As the CEO and CFO back then, I faced a crossroads when advised to relinquish one of my roles by conventional wisdom learned in business school. I refused to bow to the norm and held onto both hats. Despite pressure to appoint a dedicated CFO, I stood my ground, sharing the CEO responsibilities with my husband, who also was the Director of Sales. Because of their insistence, the investors, I reluctantly agreed to meet a candidate for the CFO position. To my astonishment, this business school-educated individual lacked fundamental financial knowledge, struggling to differentiate between debit and credit. The experience left me incredulous. I couldn't entrust the company's finances to someone with such a gap in basic financial understanding. I swiftly made the decision to part ways with the ill-equipped candidate. It was a stark reminder that practical experience often outshines theoretical knowledge. I continued juggling both roles, proving that sometimes, life experience is the best teacher. What story about the clash between life experience and education can you share? #lifeexperience #education #businesshumor #entrepreneurship

★ Fractional CFO & NED working alongside a portfolio of founders helping them achieve their business aspirations ★ Founder at Perle
Welcome to the Alphabetti Anecdotes – a series of posts looking back over the 40 years since I gained my Chartered Accountancy qualification This week “F is for Fractional” Back in my formative years fractional was most definitely just a mathematical term – who would have thought that many moons later I would be a fCFO ? – or in full a Fractional Chief Financial Officer. For those not in the know this means providing part time CFO services to a portfolio of clients - for me this means working with a small number of founder-led entrepreneurial companies from prerevenue up to a few £million of turnover Having been ploughing this way for over 5 years and supporting over 45 enterprises I can really see the benefits for all. For my clients they get the benefits and wisdom of my 40 years in the worlds of finance and commerce – from buying and selling companies, creating business plans and pitch decks through to instigating regular board meetings based on data and strategy – and all supported by a voice and face available to them when needs arise. For me I get the absolute pleasure of working with a bunch of inspirational leaders and a variety of challenges that I could only dream about – as well as being to organise my life so that both clients and personal life are in balance. When I was in my corporate phase I never thoughts that this stage of my professional life would be so fulfilling – it’s the dream I didn’t know about coming true. #perlesofwisdom #bizfit #alphabettianecdotes

Founder, CEO NEXPLAYCAPITAL| Financial Analysis, Portfolio Management, Investment Management, Private Equity, VC Fundraising, Alternative Investments,Strategic and Tactical Portfolio Management, CFA, CAIA, APMA Candidate
As a CFO, it's crucial to have a clear vision and a deep understanding of your numbers. But that's not enough. You also need to anticipate the future, both the upside and the potential risks. And that's just the beginning. The key is to keep the CEO informed and to prepare detailed yet streamlined analysis so that your team can make informed decisions ahead of time. As a CFO, you need to be three steps ahead of the curve, not just one. 😎
