🛑 DON’T: hire a PR agency if you can’t (or won’t) devote *internal resources* to the effort. DO: hire a PR agency when your exec team *prioritizes comms* as a key biz driver 📈 That’s it. That’s the whole post. This is the way ✊ #publicrelations

Parry Headrick is one of my favorite PR truth tellers, but I think it's helpful to understand what to expect in terms of the level of internal resources you need to commit when you engage a PR firm. 1. Onboarding. You and your executive leaders need to onboard the agency. You need to help them understand your story and your message as well as your key business goals. You need to work together to figure out how to tell your story in ways likely to work with the media or other target audiences. If you hire an agency expecting quick wins and don't put the time into onboarding, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. 2. Regular engagement. If you find it difficult to make time for regular calls with your PR partner, don't be surprised when you don't see much in terms of results. If you cancel the regular calls and approach your consultant when you need something now, don't be surprised if they can't deliver it. We schedule regular meetings to prevent the need for rush jobs. A client's failure to plan ahead is not the consultants emergency (unless it really is an emergency, which leads me to...) 3. Crisis mitigation. PR firms are used to helping you get through a crisis. But what you do when there is no crisis can help prevent something from turning into one. If you are concerned about what might happen, the time to think about how you'd respond and put together a plan is long before it actually happens. 4. Being responsive. Reporters are busy. If a reporter is interested in talking to you, they are interested now. If your spokesperson has a tendency to require three emails, two texts and a week to get back to the PR firm about an interview the story might be out already. If media engagement is a priority, set the expectation with your spokespeople that they need to prioritize it. That said, it's not just about the media. If you say you are going to send your PR partner materials to review, we can't start to do our part until we receive them.
