Tomorrow is A-level results day and it's great to read that 33,560 people in England have applied for a nursing degree, and 7,290 applied to become a midwife (NHS England) 👏 Inspiring the next generation to pursue a career in these professions is key, and we hope that with continued support for nursing and midwifery staff, the workforce grows larger and stronger. What advice would you give to someone about to start their training in nursing or midwifery?

#nationalmidwfieryweek2024 - EDUCATION Over 97% of practicing midwives in the US complete graduate education programs leading to an MS, MSN, MSM, DNP, DM, or PhD. Completion of an accredited program allows the graduate to sit the national AMCB certification exam. https://lnkd.in/gywBkmi5 University development of new programs has exploded over the last three years, a percentage rise never seen before. #GrowMidwives consulting includes work with UT/Memphis, UAB/Birmingham, Loyola/New Orleans (all pre-accredited), and pre-accreditation applications of Connell School of Nursing at Boston College and UAMS/Little Rock, Arkansas. We are in early conversations with 4 additional universities. WHY this significant growth? URGENT workforce needs across all states and in some cases, state legislative mandates to address their poor maternal health outcomes. A list of ideas to HELP GROW the workforce: 👉Affiliates: organize around how to collaborate with programs. Consider designing a clinical preceptor registry, share how to effectively integrate a student while meeting employment expectations, design CE on being an effective preceptor, create a list of standard expectations for student learners prior clinical placement, meet with program faculty and talk about challenges as well as solution-oriented strategies to grow the workforce. **And look for state/philanthropic funding that will help the Affiliate support clinical site/preceptor development and readiness. 👉Midwife supporters and midwives: talk with the State Hospital association, Rural Health association, State Health Department and the primary commercial and Medicaid plans about state workforce concerns and BARRIERS to full scope midwifery practice. Consider attending a District ACOG event and meet obs to talk about educational requirements and consider sponsoring a student for future employment. One would be surprised how little most know about the rigor of midwifery education, scope of practice — and COST. Sustainability of the nursing and midwifery workforce is a global concern. In acknowledgement of International Nurses Day today, and in line with the #IND2024 theme, ‘#OurNursesOurFuture – The Economic Power of Care’, we spotlight a recent JBI scoping review, ‘Individual and environmental factors that influence longevity of newcomers to nursing and midwifery’. Although nursing serves as the cornerstone of healthcare, it frequently encounters financial constraints and societal undervaluation. This review is the first step in developing a comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence both graduate Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife retention. NHS England urges students to choose nursing & midwifery careers! 🙏 In a bid to further boost NHS workforce numbers, NHS England is urging students and those looking for a new direction in life to consider the university clearing system and kickstart a career in healthcare. The NHS campaign, in which health chiefs are urging soon-to-be graduates to pick a career in nursing and midwifery, comes as A-level students await their results today.
