We’re not as one-dimensional as we all seem on Linkedin. For me, balancing the multitude of aspects of myself is the most important thing in my life. Balancing my business, family/friends & passions. But how do I achieve that balance? In 2 simple ways. A what & a how. The what is about having an overarching goal. “How do I want my life to look when I’m on my deathbed?” With many checkpoint goals along the way “How do I want my life to look when I’m 60? When I’m 50? When I’m 40? Next year? Next month etc” To achieve this I need to mindfully focus my efforts on the things that will get me to those goals. And they aren’t just about money & business, because on my deathbed I won’t be wanting final hugs from my bank account. That’s not to say that money & business goals aren’t important. But they are just one aspect of my whole. The how is about focus. Extreme focus on the separate parts of my whole, individually. This benefits me in 2 ways: Firstly, take music as an example (one of my favourite passions). Listening, curating & composing. When I’m composing/recording/mixing, I have an extreme focus. my eyes, my ears, my thoughts…i’m honed in. It might seem counterintuitive & even stressful, but the fact that I've blocked out everything (including business) to focus on my music is actually a benefit to all my other pursuits. Switching everything off and focusing solely on the music for that period of time fully rejuvenates me for when I'm back to thinking business. I try to do this for whatever I’m focusing on, so it will have the same effect on everything else. The second benefit is that it also multiplies the outcome quality of whatever you’re focused on. #lifehack!!! Extreme focus on your business? You’ll be making better decisions, quicker, Extreme focus on family & friends? You’ll be building better relationships and stronger bonds. Extreme focus on learning how to edit builds on Fortnite to keep up with your kids? You’ll be boxing in, smashing chugs & getting squad Vic Royales asap…Can you tell how my kids and I like to spend our time together? 😂 Submitting to extreme focus is difficult, but it’s key. Whatever you’re doing, it needs and deserves your full focus at the moment you have decided to focus on it. It’s also just as important to balance the time you spend on each focus. You’r overarching goal will help dictate this, but you’ll need to keep on top of it by continually checking in with those goals. I met Carlo Facchino at a local coffee shop. But the thing is we weren't supposed to meet that afternoon. Matter of fact, I was there talking through some business development ideas with a few partners of mine, also small business owners here in Fremont. It makes so much sense though, how the universe ultimately connected us that day. Because Carlo is someone who was audacious enough to believe that he could literally row from California to Hawaii while sustaining himself at sea, all on his own, with nothing surrounding him except the blueness of the Pacific. Ultimately, it took him 72 days and he made it all the way to Hawaii. What's perhaps more amazing though, is that in so many ways, he's still on a journey of self-discovery and adventure, always thinking of the next incredible dream to pursue (even after accomplishing the impossible). To say I resonate with Carlo and the thoughts he shared at our last BTR TMRW event would be such an understatement. He embodies strength and optimism, and the audacious nature of the human condition. And though I haven't yet accomplished such monumental goals, that's the spirit upon which I've built my own life, and the future of my family.
