I just finished my first week in the fellowship program of The Honor Foundation and seeing as introspection is the name of the game for the first part of the fellowship I’m doing what they told me to do and I’m reflecting. Transitions of any type are hard but I feel that transitioning out of the military (especially after 20+ years) is especially unique. Though it’s not the transition I’m reflecting on. I’m reflecting on the joining of the military in the first place and all the grumbling associated with military service. Let me first say this, the military is not easy. It’s not perfect, it’s full of peaks and valleys but I want to shout from the roof tops, “I would not trade my experiences I’ve had in the military for all the money in the world!” As I sit here, and listen to some of the stories of corporate America or life outside the military it makes me realize one thing: Every community has negative aspects about it. I say this, because as I hang up my uniform, there needs to be a generation of service oriented people who are willing to step up and carry the torch forward. Is it glamorous, no. Will there be parts of it that you absolutely hate, yes. Military service is a game, it will absolutely squeeze you hard for all your worth but if you know how to play the game, you can squeeze back just as hard and capitalize on experiences and opportunity that very few will ever get in their lives. I challenge other veterans to focus on the positive associated with their service, so that those in the next generation who might be on the fence will actually take the leap of faith, and potentially be the next person with the intent of only doing one term, becoming a career Servicemember. #military #militarytransition #servicemembers #service #itsnotthatbad
