Today marks World Youth Skills Day and celebrates the importance of equipping what the UN defines as “young people” (15-24) with skills for employment and entrepreneurship. The youth of today hold the promise of positive change but we need to support and provide this generational cohort with the foundational skills to succeed and navigate the complexities of the modern world. As we look around us, we see a world that is changing at an unprecedented pace. The world my grandchildren will encounter when they are 18 will be vastly different to the one I experienced when I left high school. Unprecedented technological advancements, social transformations, and global challenges require a multi-faceted skillset. But how can we as leaders empower the youth in our organizations with the skills needed to thrive and be the best versions of themselves? A critical first step is for organizations to understand that ‘young people’ are not simply one monolithic group with similar characteristics and traits. And given that by next year, Gen Y (born 1980 – 1996) will make up 39% of the workforce, and Gen Z (born 1997 – 2012) will represent 23%, it is critical that organizations not only understand the differences between these generational cohorts but leverage this knowledge to inform what matters to each cohort and develop benefits, development and advance opportunities and workplace strategies to effectively recruit, develop and engage them. To learn more about their differences and recommended strategies to motivate different age cohorts currently in the workplace, read my blog on this topic: https://lnkd.in/eDy7q7cv. In the comments, please recognize and tag a young leader you know who is blazing a trail and making a positive difference in their community. #WorldYouthSkillsDay #YouthEmpowerment #FutureLeaders #SkillsForSuccess #NextGenLeadership

It’s been almost five months since the last time I posted. A lot has happened: growth, progress, achievements, networking, travel, and friendships. It was all accompanied by the natural stress and a breakdown or two. I have got so much to tell you. Major updates. However, there is something that I wanted to highlight before anything else. Something that I have touched on in various events and multiple occasions: our youth is eager to be someone rather than to do something. We are making them spokesmen and women before they even understand how the wheel turns. I’ve seen many young ambassadors and representatives who haven’t rolled up their sleeves and gotten their hands dirty. And I believe that this is dangerous. I understand that things are moving fast, and the time is changing, but I also believe that positions, status, and titles are to be earned. Many became occupied with completing programs rather than going down to the field and accomplishing the change. This is why I would like to urge all the youth programs to reassess their strategies. I understand that giving titles is the best way to attract youth and encourage them. Nevertheless, we need to pay attention to what we are teaching our young and how we are affecting their development. Achieving impact and change is more important than talking about it. #youth #impact #growth #change #sustainablechange

🌍 Today, on World Youth Skills Day, I reflect on the power of skills in shaping our future. As youth, we are the architects of change, equipped with the tools to build a better tomorrow. "If you can’t feed a hundred people, then just feed one." This powerful message from Mother Teresa reminds us that every small action counts. She encouraged others not to wait for well-known leaders to take action but to follow their visions and act when there was a real need. By doing what she could to help, she became a leader herself. Let’s seize this day to empower ourselves through learning, innovation, and resilience. Let's remember that our individual contributions, no matter how small, can have a significant impact. Together, let's harness our skills to drive sustainable development and create opportunities for all. Here's to celebrating our potential, making every skill count, and leading by example just like Mother Teresa. 🌟💪 #WorldYouthSkillsDay #YouthPower #SkillsForChange #BeTheChange #Collaboration #Partnerships #TogetherWeCan

Engagement, shifting demographics, the intergenerational workforce, skills and leadership pipelining, and connecting with diverse talent are all top of mind for #Employers and #CareerEducators. Mentorship can be a powerful tool in addressing these challenges and opportunities. One of the key take-a-ways from "Gen Z Rising: Attracting, Engaging, and Retaining the Workforce of the Future"(The Conference Board of Canada, 2023) is the imperative to provide #students and #grads with opportunities to grow, while recognizing what they bring to the table. Beyond traditional mentorship models, innovative approaches like reverse, peer, and triad mentoring are proving to be effective in fostering growth and engagement. We've curated a few articles exploring each of these mentoring models further: 1️⃣ How Reverse Mentoring Bridges Generational And Cultural Divides In The Workplace (Forbes) - https://lnkd.in/gRUi4Ugh 2️⃣ The Value of Peer Mentorship for Professional Development (EnPoint) - https://lnkd.in/gHJjXYrc 3️⃣ Why foster intergenerational triads? (National Institute on Ageing via Challenge Factory) - https://lnkd.in/gxRbG36S Are you using any of these models as a part of your #CampusRecruitment, #CareerDevelopment, or #ExperientialEducation programming? What other approaches are proving effective in meeting talent needs? Comment below. ➡ Full Conference Board report - https://lnkd.in/gA3hWSyr
