Walk with me for a minute...back in 2014, bleacher report indicated that only 10 of the 128 college football head coaches in Division I did not play college football when they were in school (https://lnkd.in/eyk7hwDq) [Mike Leach being my favorite on this list...having met him at Publix in Key West one summer].
While playing experience is certainly not a requirement to be a college football coach (nor should it be, as we should want our universities to hire the candidates with the best ability to be successful coaches, not successful players, regardless of age, race, disability, or gender), it cannot be denied that having that experience and being able to look players in the eye and have them recognize that you've been in their shoes has its advantages.
