In a highly anticipated update, The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) today announced the approval of the first set of methodologies that meet the high-integrity Core Carbon Principles (#CCPs). Seven #carbon crediting methodologies were approved, and the CCP label can now be applied to an estimated 27 million voluntary carbon credits. Here are some key takeaways from the announcement 👇 ✔ The first batch of CCPs were largely for projects that destroy stockpiles of #ozone depleting substances for landfill gas projects ✔ Approved methodologies span across Verra, Gold Standard, ACR at Winrock International, and Climate Action Reserve (CAR) ✔ There are conditions on some approvals particularly around landfill gas methodologies, limiting them to projects generating a maximum 10 MW-equivalent of electricity ✔ Another 27 categories of #carboncredits, representing over 50% of the market, remain under active assessment by #ICVCM ✔ We expect to see updates on methodologies regarding improved forest management, #sustainable #agriculture, #renewable #energy and other project-types in the coming months The CCP labels put into motion a drive for greater integrity in the supply side of the carbon markets, by setting a global benchmark for quality of carbon credits. The additional layer of rigour through this label should build trust and confidence in the carbon markets. GenZero is heartened by this progressive move forward for the carbon markets, and we look forward to working closely together with like-minded industry partners to scale the carbon markets and accelerate #decarbonisation globally. 💡 #FoodforThought: Will #2024 be a year of redemption for carbon markets? (https://lnkd.in/gFRVryDR) ◾ This approval means that the prestigious CCP label can now be applied to an estimated 27 million carbon credits. ◾ These credits come from projects that combat potent greenhouse gases by capturing methane from landfill sites and destroying ozone-depleting foams and refrigerant gases from discarded equipment such as refrigerators and air conditioners. ◾ But that's not all! Another 27 categories of carbon credits, representing over 50% of the market, are still under active assessment. This includes methodologies addressing landfill gas (potentially covering an additional 76 million credits) and ozone-depleting substances (covering an estimated 4 million credits). ◾ Additionally, multi-stakeholder assessments of popular carbon credits types, such as REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), Jurisdictional REDD (JREDD), and clean cookstoves, are well underway and expected to be completed in the coming months. ◾ Under the Integrity Council’s “two-tick” process, carbon credits earn the CCP label only if both the carbon-crediting program is “CCP-Eligible” and the methodologies used are “CCP-Approved”. ◾ The CCPs set a global standard for high-integrity carbon credits, fostering trust, ensuring comparability, and maximizing the market's potential to address rising greenhouse gas emissions while unlocking significant private finance for climate solutions. Let's celebrate this milestone in the journey towards a more transparent and effective voluntary carbon market! #vcm #icvcm #ccp #labels #environment #climateaction #sustainability #carboncredits #verra #goldstandard

📣 Carbon Market Milestone 📣 The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has just unveiled methodologies that have been given the green light. This means #CoreCarbonPrinciples (CCP) labels are now shining bright on the Verra Registry, ready to be tagged onto Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) from projects that tick all the boxes under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. Why is this a big deal? The ICVCM’s nod to Verra’s VCS Program as fully aligned with the high-quality benchmarks of CCPs marks a new era of credibility and impact for carbon credits. Here are the two methodologies that have earned their CCP stripes: 🌟AMS-III.G.: Landfill methane recovery, v10.0: - Eligible for all landfill gas projects not generating electricity - Landfill gas-to-electricity projects with ≤10 megawatts electrical (MWe) 🌟 ACM0001: Flaring or use of landfill gas, v15.0–19.0 - Eligible for all landfill gas projects not generating electricity - Landfill gas-to-electricity projects with ≤10 MWe While awaiting the completion of the CCP process on other methodologies, buyers are encouraged to actively purchase and retire non-CCP labeled credits. ✊ This is just the beginning! Let's forge a #sustainablefuture, one milestone at a time! #GREENIPATH #GreenPathForward #SustainableFuture #ClimateChampions #CarbonMarket #ProtectOurPlanet #ProtectWildlife #PreserveNature #SaveOurTreasures #sustainability #sustainabilitymatters #sustainableliving #SustainabilityLeadership #actnow #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #greenearth #greenerworld #greenfuture #netzero Reference: https://lnkd.in/dGmz9umE

The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has announced the first high-integrity carbon credits to be labelled under its Core Carbon Principles (CCPs). This is a significant step forward in the development of a robust voluntary carbon market. The CCPs are a set of principles that ensure that carbon credits represent real emission reductions. They cover a wide range of issues, including the permanence of emission reductions, the additionality of carbon credits, and the monitoring and verification of emission reductions. The ICVCM assesses methodologies for creating carbon credits. So far, it has approved methodologies for landfill gas capture and destruction of ozone-depleting substances. The ICVCM is working on assessing other methodologies. The first CCP-labelled carbon credits have been generated from landfill gas capture projects in India and Brazil. These projects have been verified by independent experts to ensure that they meet the CCPs. The ICVCM's CCPs are a valuable tool for companies and organizations that want to purchase high-quality carbon credits. They help to ensure that the carbon credits that they purchase are making a real contribution to climate change mitigation. Here are some of the key benefits of the CCPs: ➡ Increased transparency and trust: The CCPs provide a clear and consistent framework for assessing the quality of carbon credits. This helps to increase transparency and trust in the voluntary carbon market. ➡ Reduced risk of fraud: The CCPs help to reduce the risk of fraud in the voluntary carbon market. This is because they provide a clear set of standards that carbon credit projects must meet. ➡ Improved environmental outcomes: The CCPs help to improve the environmental outcomes of the voluntary carbon market. This is because they ensure that carbon credits represent real emission reductions. #carboncredits #sustainability #climatechange #ICVCM #CCPlabel https://lnkd.in/gSxP74nz.

The focus of credit trading is shifting from reducing emissions to removing them altogether. Companies that wish to offset their greenhouse gas emissions can purchase two different types of credits in the voluntary market: avoidance credits for external projects that avoid or reduce emissions production, such as building a wind farm, and removal credits for projects that lower existing emissions. There are concerns about the effectiveness of the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) framework. The influence of external organisations on buyers’ decisions is growing, which could impact market growth. The entire voluntary market is a distraction. The fundamental problem with the voluntary market is the standard of verification and validation, which is questionable. If there is not enough compliance oversight, we are likely to see more carbon credits invalidated, which affects the credibility of the carbon credits system as a whole. This should not be allowed to happen. We need to pivot towards the compliance market. Terence Nunis Terence K. J. Nunis, Consultant President, Red Sycamore Global
