#ClimateWeekNYC isn’t just talk anymore; 2023 is all about action. It used to be about alarming statistics and aspirational goals. This year, it’s decisively shifting towards implementable solutions. This is encouraging. Highlights included: 📈 Powerful working sessions with investors and climate tech companies hosted by Elemental Excelerator, a frontrunner in scaling climate tech, where it’s clear that investors are gearing up to bet on first-of-a-kind commercial scale facilities for climate technologies. 🤝 A productive roundtable co-hosted by BCG and my dear friend Brad Leufkens from Teachers Venture Growth and moderated by Mark Wiseman - it’s clear that asset owners are prepared to revise traditional risk frameworks to accommodate new ways of investing in these first-of-a-kind climate businesses, conversion of "grey" (carbon-intensive) assets into "green" (sustainable) assets and de-bottlenecking #sustainability scarcities, be it rare earth minerals for EV batteries 🔋 or sustainably sourced raw materials. 🎬 I look forward to sharing some highlights in an upcoming reel from the FT studio and more insights from a truly unique Climate Week.   📣 My mantra for the week: No time for climate pessimism when focusing on climate action. Let's continue to ride this wave of action. #UNGA

We need 5x more money for Climate Adaptation every year. This requires a radically innovative approach. If we are to halt climate change before it’s too late, we need to use science to allocate philanthropic and investment capital to the most effective climate solutions and strategies – those that will yield the greatest benefit in the least amount of time. Project Drawdown’s scientific analysis shows that there are nearly 100 technologically and financially viable solutions for reducing, avoiding, or sequestering emissions. If scaled urgently and effectively, these solutions can collectively stop climate change. "Both the Deniers and the Optimists cling to their 20th-century worldview with increased fervor as it becomes clear that we’re living through the End of an Era. At what point can we collectively admit that things are much worse than we thought and won’t turn out as we expected? When can we finally be honest about our situation? Or, as Arnold Schroder, founder of the World Tree Center for Evolutionary Politics and Global Survival and host of the Fight Like An Animal podcast, put it: “How long can we say ‘it’s almost too late’ before we say ‘it’s too late’? How long will we say ‘this is happening faster than we predicted’ before simply acknowledging that it’s happening exactly as fast as it is?” The painful reality is: climate action and policy have utterly failed. Dozens, if not hundreds of meetings, summits and conferences have not led to a single improvement in the overall situation. Carbon emissions continue to rise, and the only thing that will be able to reverse this trend is the impending economic contraction, the protectionism we will see as a result of food shortages, and the resource scarcity we’re just now getting the first taste of. One way or another, emissions will drop – but not because people want them to. Furthermore, it remains to be seen how many tipping points we’ve breached already, and how long it takes to balance the current concentrations of greenhouse gases and ecological destruction on the ground out again. (Current estimates range around 100,000 years.)" Rather long read, but well worth the time investment if you need some well articulated arguments around a topic that trumps all others: the ongoing #collapse of termo-industrial societies and the biosphere. Cynefin® are building a repository of stories regarding what motivates people to help nature and the planet. Analysis occurs using the powerful Sense-Maker® engine. The Sense-Maker® approach is different to what you are used to, but we know you will enjoy it! Public and open reports for anyone to read, share, and use will be created. We know that we must innovate to have a better tomorrow and part of innovating is sharing knowledge through story telling. Therefore, we encourage you to share your experiences regarding climate change. Not the End of the World. The book by Hannah Ritchie, with the title “Not the End of the World”, has been all over the media. And that is understandable, given that it sends an optimistic signal, in a heated global debate. Most people just want to hear comforting good news that everything will be fine. Probably, she wants to activate real change through positive messaging. Hannah Ritchie does not deny climate change, on the contrary. But what about the other planetary boundaries and the geopolitical and capitalist market reality that we live in? She speaks of the potential for the world to change and highlights the progress we have already made. But what about the bigger picture: the world's actual collective will to change, at pace and at scale? “How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet”. Yes, we CAN be. But: we do not have a knowledge problem nor a solutions problem. We have an implementation problem. But indeed, it is up to us. Will change happen by design? Or will it happen by disaster?
