Today marks #WorldEnvironmentDay. Let's take a moment to reflect on the critical state of the various key environments around the world - from lush rainforests to vibrant coral reefs. In the tropics where #Singapore resides, #forests are the dominant ecosystems. Examples of the different forest types we have on our sunny island include (credit to National Parks Board): 🌳 Lowland dipterocarp forests: Tropical rainforests found in Southeast Asia, typically at elevations below 300 metres. Forest canopy tends to be dominated by tall dipterocarp trees which can reach heights over 80 metres. (e.g. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Singapore Botanic Gardens Rainforest) 🌳 Coastal hill forests: Woodlands that grow on hills and slopes near coastal regions (e.g. Hills at Labrador Nature Reserve) 🌳Freshwater swamp forests: Forests growing in wet, fresh water, lowlands that are flooded permanently or seasonally (e.g. Central Catchment Nature Reserve and the centre of Pulau Tekong) 🌳Secondary forests: Forests that have regrown following complete removal of earlier forests (e.g. old plantations/orchards that have been abandoned that have been overtaken by a diversity of native species over the years) All of these comprise some of the many essential habitats needed for biodiversity to thrive. But yet many are facing unprecedented levels of degradation. If we continue unchanged, a fifth of the Earth's natural habitats could be gone by 2100. It's time to come #together and #takeaction to #restore and #protect our environments for future generations. Whether it's conserving forests, promoting sustainable agriculture, or reducing pollution in our seas and oceans, there are countless ways we can make a difference. Let's not wait until it's too late. Let's work together to ensure a sustainable future for all living beings on this planet. #WorldEnvironmentDay #RestoreOurHabitats #ProtectBiodiversity (Photos below: The Central Catchment Nature Reserve is Singapore’s largest nature reserve with >2,000 hectares of forest and a diversity of wildlife, including the Lesser Mousedeer, the Olive-winged Bulbul and the Raffles Banded Langur.)

Nature's Masterpiece: The Biodiversity of Knuckles🦎🐍🐸🐦 The Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka, is a treasure trove of biodiversity. This rugged terrain, named for its resemblance to a clenched fist, is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic. Key species include the Knuckles pygmy lizard (Cophotis dumbara), the purple-faced langur (Semnopithecus vetulus), and the Knuckles rock frog (Nannophrys marmorata). The area also hosts the rare and vibrant Sri Lanka blue magpie (Urocissa ornata) and the critically endangered red slender loris (Loris tardigradus). Towering peaks, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls create a perfect habitat for over 200 species of plants, 120 species of birds, and numerous mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. Protecting this biodiversity hotspot is crucial for preserving the ecological balance and natural heritage of Sri Lanka. #ClimateAction #SSCCA #InnovateForClimate #SustainableFuture #LifeKnuckles #ProtectOurhome #Climatecgange #Ecopulsepera #SLteam1

Kalpitya - Sri Lanka. When it comes to biodiversity, tropical evergreen forests are immediately introduced. But there are biodiversity zones in the ocean that are not inferior to land. Near Kalpitia there are several coral reefs with beautiful marine life and colorful fish. Some coral reefs have been declared protected areas by the government. Bar Rif is a coral reef system off the coast of the Kalpitiya Peninsula in Sri Lanka. It has the highest biodiversity of all coral reefs in the surrounding waters and is one of the few intact coral reef systems in Sri Lanka. This reef complex is of great ecological, biological and aesthetic importance, as it is home to 156 species of coral and 283 species of fish. Bar Rif was declared a marine reserve in 1992. For many years, Bar Reef was almost unguarded, and it was threatened by both natural enemies (starfish, coastal erosion and sediments) and human activities. In 1999, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) decided to fund the “Coastal Resource Management Project (CRMP)” in Sri Lanka to secure resources and address coastal erosion, pollution, unmanageable fishing, overexploitation of resources, and coastal poverty. Today, Bar Rif has begun its natural restoration, so many places are closed to tourists. But still you can admire the marine ecosystem, in the safest places for corals. https://lnkd.in/g3Qp6qzy 070 399 5771 #nature #marinelife #beach #adventure #holiday #tour

V.Hemanthkumar Article on giant panda The panda, with its distinctive black and white coat, is adored by the world and considered a national treasure in China. This bear also has a special significance for WWF because it has been our logo since our founding in 1961. Pandas live mainly in temperate forests high in the mountains of southwest China, where they subsist almost entirely on bamboo. They must eat around 26 to 84 pounds of it every day, depending on what part of the bamboo they are eating. They use their enlarged wrist bones that function as opposable thumbs. A newborn panda is about the size of a stick of butter—about 1/900th the size of its mother—but females can grow up to about 200 pounds, while males can grow up to about 300 pounds as adults. These bears are excellent tree climbers despite their bulk.Wild panda numbers are finally rebounding after years of decline. In September, the International Union for Conservation of Nature announced that pandas have been upgraded from “endangered” to “vulnerable.”The biological diversity of the panda’s habitat is unparalleled in the temperate world and rivals that of tropical ecosystems, making the giant panda an excellent example of an umbrella species conferring protection on many other species where pandas live. In other words, when we protect pandas, we invariably protect other animals that live around them, such as multicolored pheasants, the golden monkey, takin, and crested ibis. Pandas also bring sustainable economic benefits to many local communities through ecotourism. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

Today is World Environment Day! 🌳🌍 The Amorim Group prides itself on its commitment to sustainability and its contribution to preserving biodiversity through the key role played by cork oak forests. Cork oak forests are major carbon sinks - capturing over 73 tons of CO2 for every ton of cork produced. They also form part of one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots, on a par with Amazonia and the African Savanna. Endangered species found in the cork oak forests of Portugal, Spain and North Africa include the Iberian Lynx, Iberian Wolf, Atlas Deer and Spanish Imperial Eagle. The WWF - World Wild Fund for Nature, estimate that over 100,000 people in southern Europe and North Africa directly and indirectly depend on these forests, which, in addition to being natural reservoirs of biodiversity, are important cultural landscapes. . . . #WorldEnvironmentDay #sustainability #amorimtopseries #innovation #innovativeproducts #sustainablecapsules #sustainablebynature #recork #corkoakforest #corkoaktree #luxurybynature #nature #cork #stopper #corkstopper #spirits #sustainability #sustainablepackaging #amorimcork #amorim

Species Sunday: Autumn, the sun is gone, but not the Sun Bear. Help them to keep it that way. Every Sunday, a new species that you never heard of that needs your support. Sun bears, a keystone species in tropical forests, are facing severe challenges from deforestation, habitat degradation, poaching, and snaring, with fewer than 10,000 remaining globally. A rehabilitation program in Malaysian Borneo aims to release rescued bears back into the wild, but the success rate has been mixed, with as few as half surviving. Experts emphasize the need to prevent poaching through a holistic approach that supports local communities with ecotourism. Help the Sun Bears to recover by supporting the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center - every coin matters. Wishing you a great start to your wild week! P.S. What is your favorite bear? (Don't be afraid; sun bears can't read, so they won't be offended 🥁) #environment #nature #biodiversity #speciessunday
