Head of Unit (Information Solutions) @ Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) | Software Development, IT Architecture, Data
Innovating Through Data: The Geology-Software Synergy: The intersection of geology and software development is a testament to how interdisciplinary collaboration can lead to remarkable innovations. By integrating geological data analysis with cutting-edge cloud based software solutions, we're unlocking new possibilities in environmental research and resource management. This synergy allows us to create more accurate models of the Earth's subsurface, leading to better decision-making in areas such as urban planning, disaster management, and natural resource exploration. It's a space where the meticulous nature of geoscience meets the agility of software engineering, resulting in a powerful combination that can address some of the most pressing challenges of our times. We at Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) / Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK) continue to explore this exciting frontier, as the role of research, technology and collaboration becomes increasingly important —it's essential for the continuous advancement of our understanding of planet Earth. Let's work together towards a sustainable future, underpinned by robust scientific and technological foundations. One of my lingering thoughts from @ecoacoustics24 (which was a great conference btw) relates to the role of traditional field survey data in validating new ecoacoustic methods. It can be summed up in this quote from Woodhouse (2021): The use of the term “ground truth” can distort our understanding of what remote sensing has achieved in the past and risks constraining our imagination of what it might achieve in the future. It primes us to believe that the right answer, the most truthful one, is the one that is measured on the ground not the one measured from a distance. When we use the term it does not allow for the possibility that the most valid measurement, is actually the one made from above”
