Inspired by Kentucky Geological Survey's recent post (see link in comments), I wanted to share one of my favorite geoscience demo's. This interactive exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a simple yet powerful way to visualize the relationship between grain size (and thus pore-throat size) and permeability. I don't know the porosities of these two examples, but they could possibly be equal. Moreover, it's one of my favorite places to introduce kids and remind adults of the scientific method; before inverting the wheel, make a prediction of which will fill faster then test your hypothesis!
