Carbon sequestration in agriculture: A game-changer for climate action? 🌏 Exciting new research suggests that agricultural land could play a key role in capturing carbon emissions through techniques like cover crops, biochar, and agroforestry. 🌱 By 2050, these methods could rival forest planting in reducing emissions while enhancing farm productivity and resilience to climate change. It’s a win-win for our planet and farmers alike. Working towards a greener future—through innovation and sustainability in agriculture! 🌿 #CarbonSequestration #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateAction #NetZero #AgInnovation

Director - Agriculture & Innovative Finance | Regenerative Agriculture, Farmer Livelihoods, Blended Finance
To close the climate finance gap for agriculture we need to innovate new products and structures that work for farmers and leverage investment capital seeking nature and climate positive impacts (examples: AGRI3 Fund & Aceli Africa). My first article in my new role with WWF.
Agricultural production and food systems are the main drivers of biodiversity loss, deforestation, conversion of natural habitats, and topsoil loss. And yet the overwhelming majority of capital allocated to climate and nature is directed toward energy, transport and infrastructure--food systems receive only 4%. In a new blog post, Daniel McQuillan discusses how we can bridge the gap between capital supply and demand in agriculture. https://lnkd.in/g_5zNsbn

How do we achieve a truly sustainable agricultural sector, one that can help us meet our national biodiversity and climate goals? Public sector funding is usually the answer. But, argues Martin Lines, CEO of the Nature Friendly Farming Network, it may not be enough. In this latest article for The Environment magazine, he explores the potential of blended finance – comprising both public and private sector funding – in enabling farmers to play their part in safeguarding our environment. How farming can become the gamechanger against biodiversity and climate collapse. A new generation of farmers and scientists is transforming agriculture into a potent tool for battling the ecological crisis. 1. No-Till Farming: No-till farming reduces soil disturbance, which helps preserve soil structure and promotes habitat for soil organisms. Globally, no-till farming is used on 12.5% of croplands. In regions like North America, adoption rates are higher, significantly contributing to healthier soil ecosystems and increased biodiversity. 2. Cover Cropping: This practice involves growing cover crops during off-seasons to improve soil health and provide habitats for beneficial insects and wildlife. In the US, cover crop acreage increased from 10.3 million acres in 2012 to an estimated 20 million acres in 2020. This rise in adoption underscores the growing recognition of cover crops' benefits in enhancing biodiversity and supporting pollinator populations. 3. Agroforestry: Integrating trees with crops or livestock enhances biodiversity by providing habitats for various species. Research shows a significant increase in soil organic carbon stocks and biodiversity under agroforestry systems. Agroforestry practices are widely adopted in tropical regions, driven by the need for sustainable land use systems that support diverse ecosystems. These and similar practices, if adopted widely, can transform agriculture into a powerful tool for restoring biodiversity and supporting nature restoration. The trends in adoption rates indicate a positive shift towards more sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both the environment and biodiversity. #NatureRestoration #Agroecology #SoilHealth #RegenerativeAgriculture #CoverCrops #NoTillFarming #Agroforestry

elevated total dispersion looking farther in ⇔ continuous collapse upon exposure of proclivity. easy
And the pitch for this makes me want to blow my head off, MIT 🤦🏻♂️. "One approach to the biodiversity crisis..." that's *not* the crisis*. The crisis is deforestation. Be explicit. Nobody gives a rat's ass about bio-effing-diversity*. But they hear "deforestation," and alarm bells go off. That's half our carbon sink, forests. The phytoplankton aren't just gonna double up their efforts because the trees are all gone. We need alternative agriculture — and potentially alternatives /to agriculture/ — because of the deforestation crisis. *In fact, I can show you a news article from /yesterday/ that 2.2% of species comprise a whipping 50% of rainforest trees. https://lnkd.in/gbzaRSnW

Today, the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity. This year's theme is, “Be Part of the Plan” to halt and reverse #biodiversityloss. 🌎 The #climate and #biodiversity crises are deeply interconnected and must be addressed simultaneously. As the world is losing biodiversity at a dangerously high rate, you have the power to help. By becoming better informed and choosing to buy with #sustainability in mind, our purchasing power can be used to protect biodiversity.
