Spread Awareness and Commitment to work safely A short personal story A decade ago, amidst the bustling construction activities at IOCL, Paradeep, Orissa, a seemingly routine morning turned into a pivotal moment in my life. In those days, I used to have a pre-bath ritual of massaging my body with coconut oil. Living in the coastal region of Paradeep, Orissa, the salty water had taken a toll on my leg's skin. To counter this, I used to diligently apply oil to the soles of my feet. Little did I know that this daily routine would lead to a life-altering incident. On a particularly rushed morning, as I hurriedly stepped out of the bathroom, the unforeseen consequences of my oiling routine manifested. The bathroom floor, being affected by coconut oil, became a treacherous surface. In an instant, I found myself sprawled on the ground, my left side bearing the brunt of the fall. As I instinctively tried to shield myself with my left hand, my fingers suffered multiple fractures, resulting in a trip to the hospital after a hasty round of makeshift first aid. The repercussions of this mishap were painful throughout the week, keeping me away from work as I recuperated. This incident, beyond the physical pain, imparted a profound lesson that transcends the walls of that bathroom. The takeaway is clear: the assumed safety of our homes can be deceptive. The lesson extends beyond the notion that accidents happen only at workplaces. It underestimates the need for constant vigilance in our everyday actions, even within the seemingly secure confines of our homes. The floor, rendered slippery by the oil, became a stark reminder that safety is not guaranteed, and awareness is our best defense. The crux of the lesson lies in personal responsibility. Blaming the floor for an unsafe condition is futile; instead, we must be proactive in identifying potential risks. So, let this story serve as a reminder to be conscious of your actions and your surroundings. Safety is not confined to the workplace; it is a continuous commitment to awareness and precaution, even in the most familiar corners of our lives. What you can do for safety: Stay Informed Keep yourself informed about safety regulations and guidelines. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Adhere to the use of appropriate PPE for your tasks and environments. Report Safety Concerns Be vigilant and report any unsafe conditions, hazards, or near misses promptly to your supervisor or safety officer. Promote a Culture of Safety Foster a culture of safety within your workplace by setting an example. Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and evacuation plans. Doctorate Researcher on Complex Adaptive Systems and Systems Thinking in Emergency Management. Aerodromes I Vertical Flight Infrastructures
SMS provides a businesslike framework for actively managing safety. Consider the business approach that organizations use for managing their finances: They have a chief financial officer. Their financial accounting is in line with generally accepted accounting principles. They conduct internal and external audits. They report irregularities before they become major issues. Why do they do these things? Because finances are important to them. By the same line of reasoning, if safety is important, should not safety be managed by a similar process? SMS provides that very process.

At Zinfra, safety comes first! That’s why our annual Safety Field Panel is run each year during National Safe Work Month, to help us better understand the challenges and the risks our teams face. This year our panelist discussed the critical risks they face in their day-to-day work, how they identify them and how to avoid injury or grave damage to our business operation. It was an honest and open panel, with people sharing personal stories of injures either experienced or witnessed and a look at the physical and psychological impact they can have. This was our seventh Field Panel and a sobering reminder that when it comes to safety, it is everyone’s business. We know our field members are best placed to tell us what they need to ensure their workplace is safe and our Field Panel is crucial in understanding and hearing them.
