Following the Western Gawler and Gawler Phase 2 (GP2) Geoscience Insights Workshop late last year, #GSSA has put together a report book containing the extended abstracts and summaries. With collaboration from CSIRO and Geoscience Australia, the report book introduces new data and insights on a wide range of topics based on the presentations held at the workshop in November 2023. These include: 🔍 Project background 📊 New geophysical data 📋 Surficial processes 📝 Basement processes The abstracts highlight the scope of outcomes from the GP2 project and new work in the western Gawler Craton. These outcomes increase our geological understanding of the region, and will provide explorers new insights and an improved understanding to explore more efficiently in this region. Rare Earth Elements are critical to our green future. Primary deposits of REEs are typically associated with carbonatites. By combing seismic tomography with global carbonatite locations we show there is a systematic relationship with the steep margins of ancient cratons, which does not always mirror surface geology. This is the first paper from our new NERC funded Pushing the Frontiers REE-LITH project at the University of Cambridge. After 6 years it was wonderful being back at the British Sedimentological Research Group (BSRG) AGM this week. The conference was a great success and I learned new things in a wide range of topics, from recognising ancient earthworm granules in the rock record, to how density currents can ‘bulk up’ during passage by orders of magnitude from their initial sediment mass. For our part, we showcased a high resolution multi-sensor core scan dataset through the Ness Fm (Brent Group). We used the core scan dataset for machine learning regression modelling to predict porosity and permeability beyond each plug analysis. In effect turning discrete analyses into near-continuous downcore predictions for porosity and permeability! #geology #geoscience #machinelearning
