The GSSA has released our latest comprehensive report book on the Rare Earth Element potential of the Curnamona Province, South Australia. 📱 Rare Earth Elements (REE) are used in a wide variety of materials and applications that have become essential in modern society. 🔋 REE are key ingredients for magnets, batteries, glass, lights, catalytic converters, and used in everything from cell phones to cars. 📖 This report provides a review of the major REE mineral occurrences in the Curnamona Province, their distribution, timing, and mineral systems association to better assess the REE potential. This provides a detailed appraisal of the main rock types, mineralisation styles, geochemistry and U-Pb geochronology using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) across 14 separate mineral occurrences in the Curnamona Province. The study also identifies three different mineral system associations in the Curnamona Province based on their commodities, spatial distribution and geodynamic drivers. These include U-REE, Cu-Au-REE and Cu-U-REE mineral systems. Detailed appraisal of each mineral system is provided in the report book. Today’s video is about the “Critical minerals prospectivity of the Musgraves Province in South Australia” - Part seven of our Critical Mineral Monday series. 📽️ https://ow.ly/YkvL50Tixms Assessing historic drill core from the remote Musgrave Province in the far north-west of South Australia is providing new opportunities to review the critical mineral potential of this region. In our latest video, Dr Alicia Caruso explains her work collecting new data sets from legacy drill core provided by external organisations and explorers to the state’s Drill Core Library. As we advance into a digital era, interest is shifting to a new generation of resources that may be hidden in these remote regions. While past explorers might not have targeted elements like graphite and vanadium, the Critical Minerals South Australia (CMSA) project is now analysing a diverse range of samples - geochemistry, geochronology, and petrology - alongside integrating HyLogger data. This comprehensive approach aims to reveal the Musgrave Province’s potential for critical minerals. For more of our Critical Mineral Mondays series, visit our DEM youtube: 📼 https://ow.ly/4tWr50Tixmu For more information on the project, publications, and data, visit the CMSA website: https://ow.ly/GQwV50Tixmt #CriticalMinerals #CMSA #SouthAustralia #Geology #Geoscience #Minerals #Graphite #Vanadium #Geochemistry #Geochronology #Patrology #Hyperspectral

How are magmatic and brine melt processes refleced by apatite and pyrochlore mineralchemistry? Interested? See our latest publication which is part of the phd project of Mohsin Raza. Well done Mohsin!
I am pleased to share that my first article, "The Magmatic to Post-Magmatic Evolution of the Nooitgedacht Carbonatite Complex, South Africa," has been published as part of my PhD research. This research introduces new age data, highlights the reuse of the same magmatic path during ascent, and provides detailed insights into the processes of critical metal enrichment in carbonatites. Thank you to everyone who supported me in this journey! Check it out to explore the fascinating insights into carbonatite evolution and mineralogy! https://lnkd.in/gzA-SPaa #Geochemistry #Carbonatite #RareEarthElements #Mineralogy

Ever wondered how rare earth elements (REEs) are concentrated in certain geological deposits? A study published in Ore Geology Reviews sheds light on the formation of the Lizhuang carbonatite-associated REE deposit in southwest China, providing new insights into the role of recycled oceanic components and volatiles. Key takeaways: 💡The Lizhuang syenite, part of the Mianning–Dechang REE belt, formed about 27 million years ago in a post-collisional setting. 💡The mantle source of the deposit was enriched by subducted marine sediments and altered oceanic crust, leading to the concentration of REE and volatiles. 💡The study utilized in situ Hf–O isotope analysis, mineral chemistry, and geochronology to understand the petrogenesis and volatile evolution of the syenite. 💡The findings suggest that the upwelling of asthenosphere and the reactivation of the cratonic root played crucial roles in the formation of the REE-enriched parental magmas. The research provides valuable insights into the formation of carbonatite-associated REE deposits, which are critical for high technology industries. The study of Louis Coetzee et al. documents for the first time details of the #mineralogy and #chemistry of the #Avontuur deposit, a prominent outlier of the #Kalahari Manganese Field, the world’s largest land-based #manganese deposit that is located in the Northern Cape Province of #SouthAfrica. The paper documents remarkable similarities in #geological architecture, but profound differences in mineralogy between the mangano-lutites of the Avontuur and the main Kalahari deposit. These differences are tentatively attributed to systematic lateral variations in #physicochemical conditions of mineral precipitation during the deposition of the manganiferous sediments just prior to the Great Oxidation Event, e.g., the time at which the Earth’s atmosphere became markedly enriched in oxygen for the first time in Earth’s History. #geoscience 👉 to the paper: https://lnkd.in/eFjwZXtT

🎉 NEW REPORT 📖 Geochemistry of drill core samples from the Stuart Shelf region, South Australia - Data release 2 🙂 D.C. Champion, D.L. Huston, E. Bastrakov, A. Fabris, C. Krapf, S. Gilmore, J. Byass, I. Long and S. Webber 🏦 Published by Geoscience Australia 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gTP4JdA2 The 'Geochemistry for Basin Prospectivity' project is part of Geoscience Australia's Exploring for the Future (EFTF), focusing on studying Australian basins with potential base metal mineral systems. In collaboration with the GSSA, this project investigates the baseline geochemistry of the Stuart Shelf and complements the GSSA-CSIRO project 'Sedimentary Copper Mineral Systems of the Stuart Shelf (read more: https://ow.ly/MULa50PLpIL). This report discusses all the final results from the project, and releases all the geochemical data collected from across the Stuart Shelf. In total, 888 drill core samples from 22 drillholes were analysed, targeting units from the Neoproterozoic sedimentary succession and underlying basement units. This data indicates the Wallaroo Group, Donington Suite, units of the Callanna Group, and the Tapley Hill Formation have good source rock potential with regards to sedimentary base metal systems. #SedCu #Copper #StuartShelf #EFTF #GeoscienceAustralia #Geoscience #Geology #Geochemistry #Minerals #MineralSystems #CSIRO
