Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA)’s Post

Two sizeable earthquakes in WA's Southwest were detected on Monday, 19 August 2024 with estimated magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.5. Shires of Wyalkatchem, Trayning, Tammin and Kellerberrin are in the midst of an earthquake swarm. Many smaller earthquakes have similarly been detected with activity concentrated around South Yelbeni. On Tuesday, 20 August 2024 GSWA rapidly deployed three telemetered seismometers with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in Tammin, Wyalkatchem and Trayning. Having more seismometers in the immediate vicinity of the earthquake swarm also allows better detection of lower magnitude earthquakes. With this enhanced detection capability, the fault generating the earthquakes can be better identified and mapped. Geoscience Australia will soon install more seismometers in the same area to further enhance detection capabilities. https://ow.ly/nuzx50T2KOI

The Kellerberrin and Mundaring seismometers are operated by Geoscience Australia. The Wattoning seismometer is jointly operated by Geoscience Australia and GSWA. The Kulin seismometer is part of The Australian National University's seismometers-in-schools program.
