I just finished listening to the audiobook of the book 'Invention and Innovation: A Brief History of Hype and Failure' by Vaclav Smil. This book got me thinking about how to be cautious in all our efforts to drive innovation into mining. As a result, I came up with thoughts around what I call innovation cautionary notes for the mining industry: 1. Caution: Some innovations may provide only temporary solutions to mining problems, so long-term strategies should be considered. For example, the use of diesel engines in confined spaces is a thing that will one day never be used again in underground mines? 2. Warning: Specific innovations might face potential outlawing or stringent regulations in the mining sector, requiring careful compliance—for example, the use of hydrogen in underground mines. 3. Advisory: Be mindful that some innovations could have more suitable applications in other industries, impacting their availability or relevance in mining—for example, algae-based technologies in water treatment. 4. Precaution: Over time, safety concerns may emerge with specific mining innovations, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and risk assessment—for example, using autonomous equipment in the mines. 5.
