#Tunneling | Do you know what segments are and what's their function inside the Mont Cenis base tunnel? Segments are made of concrete and used for lining the tunnels excavated with TBM. For the cross-border section of the new #LyonTurin railway line, they are produced in special sites using aggregates obtained from the excavation of the tunnel. Indian Railway conducts trial run on world's tallest railway bridge. An engineering marvel given the location and the challenges, here are some of the key points regarding it's construction: > Height: At a height of 359 Meters or 1178 feet above the Chenab river bed, this is the tallest railway bridge in the world. > Length: The Bridge consists of 17 spans, with the main arch spanning an impressive 467 metres, making it the longest of its kind. The bridge consists of 93 deck segments, each weighing approximately 85 tonnes, spanning the massive arch structure. Total Length of the bridge is 1.3 Km. > Designed to withstand extreme conditions, it is engineered to withstand wind speed upto 266 Kmph, and temperatures ranging from -20 to 45 degree Celsius. > Built to be ‘blast-proof’ and to withstand severe earthquake going upto magnitude of 8 on Richter scale, ensuring its structural integrity even in the face of potential disasters. Flota is the track that has excellent floating capacity, which is benefit from the design of the relatively flat cross member that increases the effective contact area on the ground and lower the ground pressure. These bogie tracks provide high floatation in wet, soft, and sensitive terrain. First earthquake-proof railroad bridge expansion joint -The new intercity line Toluca–Mexico City is scheduled to become operational early in 2021. It has a length of 57.7 km. The daily passenger estimate is about 230,000 to 300,000. The investment volume amounts to 2.5 bn US$. Special feature is the seismic protection system for two long viaducts. For this purpose, so-called guided cross-ties, the first absolutely earthquake-proof railroad bridge expansion joints, are installed at the ends of the individual bridge sections.

The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is an innovative approach to tunnel construction that leverages the geological conditions and inherent strength of the surrounding rock mass to stabilize the tunnel. Developed in the 1950s, NATM emphasizes the importance of monitoring and adapting to the actual ground conditions encountered during excavation. Key features of the method include the use of shotcrete (sprayed concrete), rock bolts, and steel ribs to support the tunnel, while the deformation of the surrounding rock is carefully observed and measured. This observational approach allows for adjustments in support systems as needed, optimizing safety and cost-efficiency.
