For all my HPO and chaplain colleagues, do you ever think that our end state for spiritual fitness is overly reductionistic as though providing meaning and purpose is the point of spirituality. I mean the success of the military hinges on dehumanizing the “other” as a target or an enemy, etc. Grossman talks about the value of dehumanizing in order to get people to pull a trigger, to take a life. Our work then is really to piece back together, to rebuild the human when those pieces of their humanity have been ripped away, stolen, stripped away, taken. What if meaning is just not possible because the mission and need at that moment was just so heinous? I've heard stories like that. Some of the experiences I've had made it difficult to find meaning in what was happening at the time and for years later. Where the action required was so grievous to that person it was difficult to make meaning of it at all. Healing sometimes starts with that acknowledgement. We have to find a way to help the human to be human again. So they can find community with other humans and with themselves and with their God. To find self value, compassion, forgiveness, virtue as a way for living into the future. Thankfully, there is belonging in the company of others who walk that path. This is perhaps how I would sum up my Air Force chaplain career. This is the calling we owe it to young chaplains to talk about and invite them into. How would others describe this work we do?

For those in Minnesota, this long Memorial weekend is the perfect time to head to the cabin and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. Whether it's filling up the gas tank, checking the tires, hooking up campers, preparing food, packing essentials, or planning activities, each task is essential. Your business operates in much the same way. A clear strategy and plan, where everyone knows their role and is aligned with the destination and timeline, ensures smooth operations—no grumpy travelers! Consider how uncomfortable it is when someone doesn't do their part or isn't aware of their responsibilities. It can throw off the entire weekend. The same goes for your business. Clear communication, knowing our roles, and doing our parts are key to success. Let me help you plan your business journey, ensuring your strategy and culture are aligned. 🕊️ This is Mr. Ken Wright Yesterday at the 80th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, I had the very moving and quite unexpected honour of recounting this brave, 101 year old war veteran's experience of the 6th June 1944. So many of the local community and people gathered from a diverse array of countries were there to show their gratitude and respect to the soldiers who risked everything for our freedom. Without glorifying the horrors of war, it is a moment for me to reflect and recognise my ability to act, that every choice we make counts. D-day left us with examples of courage and integrity, but also with the most fundamental legacy of possibility. There is possibility in everything, every moment. It is a choice as to how we look at things, through the lens of love and courage or fear. We have a choice of how we frame what we accept to see or if we blinker ourselves, restraining our potential and possibilities. Through possibility we feel enthusiasm, through fear we feel stuck, despondent, and feelings of disempowerment that prevent us from the outcomes we want. The gap between these mindsets is very small but the outcomes can be stark. As they say, even faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. What do you want to nurture? Where you put your attention flows. Every moment here together is precious so forget imposter syndrome and analysis paralysis. Instead concentrate on movement, intention. This is freedom. We cannot control external events but we can choose how we respond to them. Fear and sadness look back, compassion accepts the reality of the present, courage and enthusiasm look forward. Of course we owe it to ourselves to thrive, but we also owe it to our collective, and to the acts of integrity coming from all of our histories, not to settle. Saying thank you is the least we can do, acting with courage, gratitude and fraternity is even better. #leadership #perceptiveintelligence

These reasons collectively make Memorial Day a profound and heartfelt occasion for expressing gratitude.

This morning, I was reminded of the profound impact we can have on others without even realizing it. As I headed into my annual physical readiness test, I crossed paths with a Sailor I recruited nearly a decade ago. Hearing him express gratitude for the guidance I provided him all those years ago left me speechless. But the surprises didn't end there. Later, I encountered another Sailor I had recruited about eight years back. His heartfelt appreciation for the support I offered during his enlistment process reaffirmed the importance of the work I do every day. Two encounters, two stories of gratitude, in one day—how can I begin to describe the overwhelming sense of fulfillment I felt? These moments reminded me that every interaction, no matter how small, leaves a lasting impression. It's a testament to the significance of the connections we make and the impact we have on others' lives. As a recruiter, I sometimes question if my efforts truly make a difference. Today, those doubts were put to rest. These experiences serve as a powerful reminder that every conversation, every piece of advice, and every act of kindness matters more than we may realize. To those who have entrusted me with their futures, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey. Your stories remind me of the privilege and responsibility that come with helping others achieve their dreams. On June 6, 1944 (80 years ago), brave soldiers from the Allied forces embarked on a mission that required unparalleled courage and resilience. They changed the course of history! As I reflect on this momentous day, I am humbled by their sacrifice and the profound impact it has had on our world. The impact it had on their present and our future! The stories of heroism and determination that emerged from the beaches of Normandy are a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom and the strength of the human spirit. These men and women, many of whom were just young adults, faced unimaginable challenges with unwavering resolve. Their legacy is a powerful testament to the values of bravery, unity, and selflessness. I can't even imagine the fear and uncertainity they must have felt! For me, D-Day is more than a historical event; it is a source of inspiration and a call to honor those who have served and continue to serve. It reminds me of the importance of resilience in the face of adversity, the impact that collective action can have on shaping a better future and how their selfless patriotism has given me the life I have today . As we commemorate this day, let us take a moment to remember and honor the sacrifices made by the heroes of D-Day.
