It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of our leader, friend, and mentor, president and CEO, Dr. Brian Davis. Brian was an exceptionally talented and intelligent individual who left a tremendous imprint on the education and zoological fields. Furthermore, he was a beautifully compassionate human being who lifted others up and dedicated himself to creating a caring and diverse space at the Aquarium. He was a dynamic thinker and always pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve, making Georgia Aquarium an extraordinary place. He was one of the first employees at the Aquarium prior to opening in 2005 and led us through years of innovation and growth. Brian’s indelible imprint made all those he knew better – we are better because of Brian. As we navigate this heartbreaking news, our priority lies with caring for staff. We may have limited operations over the coming days to allow our staff time to grieve. “We are heartbroken by this news. Brian was a giant in leadership with his intellect, wisdom, and imagination,” said Steve Koonin, Chairman of the board of Georgia Aquarium. Our thoughts are with Brian’s family and all those that he touched throughout his life.
I’m devastated. There are so few Black CEOs in conservation. His lifelong dedication to protecting marine life has inspired so many including young black men and women. I loved his revolutionary vision for expanding GA and hope the Georgia community know how much he was loved across the country.
He was an incredibly joyous spark for so many of us within the zoo and aquarium world and treated all of us with respect and kindness, no matter your role. A wonderful model for how to engage, lead, and ensure there was a pathway for all, including young black and brown leaders. Shocked and saddened by this news and hope to embody some of his spirit for change.
Devastated! I am crushed by this news. We lost a great leader but an even better man, friend, brother, mentor, husband, father, grandfather. My heart goes out to his family who Brian loved deeply. May god help his wife, kids, and grandchildren through this time. I will miss my dear friend. Brian’s lost will impact many because he touched many. Honored to have been able to work with Brian but proud to have been able to call him a friend. Sad day!
This is heartbreaking news. Brian contributed so much to inspire the aquarium and zoo community to elevate our aspirations for our people and for our missions. My heart goes out to your entire team at GA. He will be missed by many.
Unbelievable. This news comes as shock & my deepest condolences to the Georgia Aquarium family. It was just few years ago we did a work mission to Oahu . Meeting the man showed why he is such an extraordinary leader. So fortunate to have known Dr. Brian Davis . Rest in Peace Sir.
A devastating loss, a dear friend and leader. Nothing but motivating conversations and memories with him. He so loved his personal family and his GAI Family.
Extending our deepest, heartfelt condolences. Wishing Georgia Aquarium and Brian's family strength and support during this challenging time.
We are saddened to hear about the passing of Brian. Our condolences are with the Georgia Aquarium team and the entire zoo and aquarium community. We were fortunate to have Brian as our President and CEO for four years, and we know first hand what an amazing and passionate leader he was, and will be deeply missed by many at our institution.
Brian was quite simply the best - I cannot imagine how devastated the entire aquarium team must feel right now. Sending all of my supportive energy to you for the days ahead.
