Despite making up 19% of the U.S. population, only 11% of clinical trial participants come from Hispanic communities. In our latest blog post, we explore the critical need for greater representation in clinical research and how PEP!IN is working to make this change happen. Continuing the shine the spotlight on Janae McCloud today! Janae told our team about a critical lesson she's learned so far in her professional journey and about the impact she aims to make through her career. Take a look at and be inspired by Janae's powerful words: A lesson on from Janae McCloud on the importance of Support Systems: "In navigating Biomedical Research PhD programs, support systems have been invaluable. Friends, peers, mentors, and community have played crucial roles in my journey. Their encouragement, guidance, and shared experiences have provided me with perspective, motivation, and resilience. Through collaborative problem-solving and knowledge exchange, we have collectively enhanced our understanding and skills. Mentorship has been particularly impactful, offering insights, networking opportunities, and emotional support during challenging times. The camaraderie within my academic community has fostered a sense of belonging and collaboration, enriching my learning experience. Recognizing the importance of a support system, I am committed to paying it forward by offering support to others and fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration in Biomedical Research." The impact Janae wants to make on her community: "My goal is to empower underrepresented communities in medical/scientific research by increasing accessibility and exposure. I aim to create pathways for youth, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, to explore research careers and opportunities. By providing mentorship, resources, and outreach programs, I seek to break down barriers and inspire the next generation of diverse researchers. Additionally, I am committed to highlighting the achievements of women of color in these fields, showcasing their expertise and leadership to demonstrate that success knows no boundaries. Through these efforts, I aspire to foster inclusivity, diversity, and excellence in medical and scientific research, ultimately driving innovation and addressing healthcare disparities." Janae, thank you for sharing these valuable insights! You have been an example of excellence in your journey thus far and will only continue to grow personally and professionally moving forward.

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Jara McDonald highlights the importance of diversity and collaboration in advancing clinical research within the communities. "As a Hispanic female in medicine, while the number of women in the field is increasing, we remain underrepresented. It’s crucial to see yourself reflected in the diversity of doctors. Representation matters when patients visit a physician who understands and identifies with their experiences." Understanding diseases, medical interventions, and medication effectiveness relies on diverse participation in clinical studies. At Tekton Research, we are committed to making the recruitment of diverse and underrepresented populations a core competency, essential for the successful enrollment of our awarded trials. #TogetherTekton #MakingLifeBetter #ClinicalTrials #Diversity #ClinicalTrials #TogetherTekton #TektonResearch #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth #MakingLifeBetter

Last month the Nuffield Council on Bioethics published the interim findings from the first Citizens' Jury in England to explore assisted dying. These findings will be important to parliamentarians and policy makers as they consider this complex and sensitive issue in a potential Parliamentary debate in the coming weeks. Listening to the news today we reflect on the value of a deliberative process in which, over 8 weeks, HVM facilitated Jury members' rich and detailed conversations. Together the Jury explored a balanced range of evidence on the topic and developed important recommendations to be considered in any policy making process. As one Jury member said, "Hearing the values, the ideas, the ideologies that people as individuals have, and hearing their thoughts and opinions, merging those together to come to some kind of conclusion has been very, very special." We urge those who will take part in parliamentary debates to review these interim findings https://bit.ly/3zdOtb7. The full qualitative findings from the overall programme will be published early in 2025. #assisteddying #deliberation #citizensvoice #democracy #publicengagement
