In part II the author #RobertPearl cites a study led by researchers from #StanfordUniversity and #Harvard Medical School, published in 2019, found that increasing the number of primary care physicians in a community significantly enhances life expectancy. Specifically, adding 10 primary care physicians per 100,000 people was associated with a 51.5-day increase in life expectancy between 2005 and 2015. In contrast, adding 10 specialist physicians per 100,000 people corresponded to a 19.2-day increase in life expectancy. This indicates that increasing the number of primary care physicians has a more substantial impact on life expectancy compared to adding specialists. The study also noted a decline in the density of primary care physicians during the same period, dropping from 46.6 to 41.4 per 100,000 people, particularly affecting rural areas. The researchers emphasized the importance of strengthening the primary care workforce to improve population health outcomes. The study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine on February 18, 2019. Giving the decline of primary care of primary care physicians also in Switzerland, this study is particularly pertinent. Follow the discussion on #SHDSbookclub and #JoinTheExpedition
