One common challenge my candidates often share with me during their job search is the time-consuming nature of application processes, especially after a long day at work. Working with recruiters like myself can alleviate some of this burden by identifying suitable roles. However, I always encourage candidates to continue pursuing roles that interest them independently. So, when is the best time to apply? I recommend setting aside some time on the weekend specifically for this purpose, especially if you're actively seeking opportunities in the market. To make this process easier for you, I'd like to share some of the roles my team is currently working on. Take a look and consider applying to any that catch your interest this weekend! Reality of the Procurement job market right now. Lots of Procurement candidates with A Category experience from B Industry sector looking for a new exciting opportunity, ideally something different and fresh, where they can develop. Lots of companies are seeking Procurement candidates with X Category experience from Y Industry. With this relentless pursuit causing frustrations all round, the companies hiring for behaviours (think Strong Influencers, Curious Mindsets, Boundary Challengers, Tenacious Mentality) are winning. Yes there are times specific technical skills are important but do question your motivation for hiring like for like. There is often a different way.

"Procurement"- A Underrated Role! 💫 In my diverse experience across traditional roles like Marketing, Sales, and HR, my previous manager presented me with a unique opportunity in Procurement. While Sourcing and Purchasing may seem familiar, Procurement sets itself apart as a distinct and extensive role. Procurement includes the entire journey of acquiring goods or services, from identifying needs to contract negotiation and supplier relationship management. It takes a broader perspective, including purchasing and sourcing, and extends into strategic planning, risk management, and overall supply chain optimization. From my standpoint, this role remains relatively unknown among young talent like us, possibly due to a lack of awareness. Companies tend to prioritize internal hiring for Procurement, making it less visible. However, in my experience, it proves to be an intriguing and challenging profile to work especially in the manufacturing industry. You can learn everything from product research, market analysis, and supplier interactions to negotiation, contract management, logistics, and many more. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of working in Procurement. Additionally, I believe the educational scope for this role is limited. Future procurement professionals will need well-honed leadership, analytical, and contract-management skills, coupled with in-depth knowledge of their industry, business, economics, demand and supply dynamics, pricing, and cost considerations and I believe we can bring a lot to the table. I would love to hear your thoughts on this! 🙌

Are you considering procurement as a career path? My advice is simple: develop a passion for it. Procurement is more than just a means for a living, it's a profession that requires a deep understanding of the supply chain, market trends, and negotiation skills. Passion is what will drive you to excel and continuously improve in your role. So, before diving into procurement, take some time to explore the industry, learn about the intricacies of the profession, and determine if it's the right fit for you. Remember, a career in procurement is not just a job, it's a calling.

As a procurement manager, one of the best skills to have is effective negotiation. Being able to negotiate favorable terms with suppliers can significantly impact the organization's bottom line and overall success. Additionally, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and strategic thinking are also essential for success in this role. often times, I find that I'm negotiating with myself on ordinary matters. I guess that comes with the career path.

Quick thought for all my Procurement folk** If you are early to mid career, I'd highly recommend being specific with the job titles you claim in your resume. I've had countless conversations with Buyers and Procurement Specialists that have claimed Sourcing, Supplier Management, and Contract Negotiation responsibilities but are passed over for appropriate roles because they're 'Buyers' and therefore assumed to be more tactical in focus. If your functions include those responsibilities, ask your employer if shifting to a Sourcing Specialist, Category Management focused title is an option. And at the VERY least, if you are hold sourcing responsibilities, take the few minutes to outline said projects/experience *in detail* in your resume! It makes a difference! I'd recommend including any categories you have experience running RFX processes for, spend details that aren't private, what contract size you are allowed to award, and any savings generated from projects. Hiring managers & experienced professionals - what do you think?

Curious about the role qualifications play in the procurement field? Here’s what our network has to say: Based on the recent poll, here’s what my candidates think: Did your qualifications in commerce, engineering, supply chain, or similar fields help you land a great job in procurement? 🔹 YES: 72% 🔹 NO: 28% And here’s what hiring managers think: Are qualifications important when selecting candidates for mid/senior procurement roles? 🔹 YES: 64% 🔹 NO: 36% What does this tell us? 📌 A strong majority of candidates across all seniority levels found their qualifications crucial in securing a specific role in procurement. This underscores the value of educational backgrounds in commerce, engineering, and supply chain management in opening doors within the industry. 📌 While qualifications are significant for a majority of hiring decisions, a considerable portion also emphasizes the importance of experience and skills. This suggests a balanced approach to hiring, where both formal education and practical experience are valued. 📌 Whether you’re a candidate or a hiring manager, it’s clear that qualifications matter, but they’re just one part of the equation. Practical experience and skill sets play a pivotal role in shaping successful careers and teams in procurement. And since procurement professionals like numbers I found it a good idea putting these findings in graphs. I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below or call me directly 0483 205 683.
